Slings, slinging, slung!

Hi, had same problem and recently brought a 5.11 vtac 2point sling , has a toggle that you can cinch up tight or let slack out with one pull, works great for standing and kneeling shots, and hangs across front ready for quick shots, cheers lee

I prefer a narrow sling no more than 1.50 wide leather or nylon. Takes some getting used to keeping all that we carry in check while walking. Having spent a decade plus in the USMC I had plenty of chances to learn what I like. I carry mostly on the right shoulder, if raining muzzle down on the left side. Best wishes for a happy carry.

Just ordered one of these, $80 delivered. I’ll let you know if it’s any good, that said it looks good on YouTube.

Well I ordered 1 of these. I’ll cut to the chase paid $80 inclusive of postage. It never arrived until today. I tried contacting via email to gunnslinger and they never replied. I got my money back via PayPal. Stone me I arrived home to day and found a note to say the postie couldn’t deliver the item because their is £18.50 to pay for customs!!! Well they (gunslinnger) can pay the customs and return post.

I carry all mine this way, a pretty normal german hunters style of carry and I always have muzzle awareness visible to me, or I use my hand at the muzzle for more control.
It is not me on the picture though.

Look at the Kifaru Gun Bearer - It may well be a good solution for you. Hands free, under arm carry, muzzle up in front, easy, quick and smooth rifle mount.
Can be fitted to a back pack or webbing rig.

I ha e recently got it, really good. Not sure how to get rifle off a high seat, though.

Try an SA80 sling, it allows you to have the rifle held diagonally across your chest, unclip one buckle and its free to shoulder but still attached to you (very handy for security in a high seat, you can also use it as a standard sling or backpack style, best part is they are about £5.00 on ebay, although they do work best with side mounted swivels

UK stocks say discontinued. Why? Looks good. I have a z aim on my ctr. Still not that comfy. Just pulls the sticky out bits into my back. Side mounted qr mounts would cure it. But that's a new stock. This looks good.

I really like the "3HGR Light harness" which still looks to be available and is a lot better than the z-aim.

My favoured way too. Stops butt banging on knife if on right side too. You control the muzzle and the weight seems less on shoulder than the vertical behind shoulder carry. I’ve walked behind stalkers carrying that way and they just aren’t muzzle aware. I used to dance about to avoid looking down the mod of a friend who was oblivious When scanning about with a bipod fitted which made it slip back lower.

Not very sporting behavior.

I use SA80 type slings on my rifles with side-mounted swivels as they can be cinched in tight, quickly released and permit a range of carry positions. With bottom-mounted swivels I use the 3HGR light harness sling, which is slightly less versatile but more comfortable and easier to take off (doff?). I used to use the Z-Aim Stalker, but find the 3HGR more secure and durable. The Safari sling is quick into the aim, but too sloppy/bouncy for my preference.
Having used SA80 slings professionally, I cant imagine anything worse. The rifle is hand held almost all the time and is only attached in case you drop it. A slightly better system is a rear attachment point connected to body armour but I wouldnt want to go stalking with it.

Ive seen pictures of our continental friends, rifle pointing up in front of the body. Possibly try that.

a small button sewn on jacket shoulder is enough to stop it sliding off, but it is allin the eye of the beholder-if you have a heavy rifle or a slopey shoulder its sliding off!

i use a niggeloh sling and it grips well.

I done a bit of searching in this area. some background: I’m right-handed. For longer distance, I like to carry cross-body on my left shoulder, rifle across my back, muzzle up. I’ll refer to this carry style as “cross-body”.

Shorter jaunts have me with the rifle on my right shoulder, rifle still to the rear, muzzle still up. I’ll call this the “American” because I don’t know what else to call it.

Cross-body: I’ve got some longer rifles that want to pull the sling off of my left shoulder. The ones with a 24”-26” barrel plus suppressor (ahem, “mod”) are the worst.

Here’s what I’ve used and what I’m going to try.

I own:
  • 1.25” Montana Gun Slings | Custom Handcrafted Gun Slings(they come in 1” too)
    • Leather. Absolutely ingenious patented leather knot that allows instant resizing of the sling. No metal or plastic to hit your rifle. Magic. MAGIC.
    • Cross-body: Great with rifles up to 24”-ish barrels without mods. With 24” barrel +mods it’s prone to slip off. I think a 16”-20” plus mod would be fine.
    • American: very, very good because one can tighten the rifle quickly and perfectly.
  • “Ultimate Sling” Ultimate Firearm Sling - Fits ALL Firearms with Studs - Our # 1 Seller
    • Rubber. US made. Does not slip. The one I reach for when it’s raining. Very hard to adjust on the fly, as the sticky rubber does not ease through the buckles.
    • Cross-body: good with all rifle lengths, as it can work like that 3HGR strap by mimicking backpack straps, placing the weight on both shoulders.
    • American: decent, but as I have it adjusted for cross-body, split 3HGR-style, it’s a wee loose with the longer guns.
    • Just noticed they make all sorts of varieties of this sling. The one with nylon ends would make it much much much easier to swap out the swivels.
    • There's another outfit that sells a sling like this. Word is they were biz partners and split.
Since I can't seem to stop fiddling, I have on order:
  • Tab Gear simple biathlon with plastic buckles: Biathlon Sling (the regular and elite have a looped area to make a hasty sling, the simple does not). If you are traveling light (and a long way or need both hands to crawl up and around) and don't need instant access to the gun, this looks good.
  • Kifaru Gun Bearer: Gun Bearers | Kifaru International for using with a pack, but still allows quick use if used on the side. Also allows gun to be strapped in the middle of the pack for better balance (but not getting to that gun in a hurry).
  • Vero Vellini biathlon (they call it a 'double sling') Vero Vellini Double Sling. I swear this is a rebranded Niggeloh.

What looks interesting:
There's more, but I'm out of steam! (and my mac is having problems with the bullet point alignment, it seems!)

This place has bunches of slings I had never heard of: Rifle Slings - Page 1 - Triad Tactical Inc

Hi all, looking for some thoughts on something I’ve been thinking about recently and bare with me on this one!

I’m sure I’m not alone here, but I’m fed up of the traditional sling and carrying over my shoulder! A standard sling never stays on my shoulder it always slips down so I end up having to hold the sling on the shoulder or support the rifle in the hand which kind of defeats the object, carrying muzzle up it falls back potentially muzzle sweeping anyone behind me and muzzle down with a long rifle tends to catch my boots/back of my legs or sticks in the dirt! I tried the z-aim sling with an additional strap that wraps around the body To hold it in place which was ok but I don’t like the additional piece dangling when undone or the feel of it attached around the grip when shooting. I though about wearing it across the back or even one of the Twin sling backpack system things but then it seems like a lot of work to get the rifle into a shooting position off the back and time consuming for when quick shots may be needed.

So then I thought, and here’s the main question for the thread, why do we wear them on the back? Surely front sling makes shouldering the rifle quicker and easier and gives better control of muzzle direction.

Military personnel often wear their rifle across the front of their body and I’ve been thinking this seems like a great idea! On the front of the body across to stop slipping and handy for quick raising of the rifle. I know they made a sling for the SA80 rifle with an additional clip allowing you to quickly point it down range without having to unsling the rifle and a quick google showed a few variants of similar sling systems.

So, what are your thoughts? Anybody sling across the front of the body? Any recommendations for slings to try?

Picture from google to demonstrate the idea.

cheers
I’ve got the “ultimate firearms sling “from the u.s it’s so comfortable can be carried in over shoulder and with double straps hands free doesn’t slip as it’s made of rubber and think was only £50 with the import duty has mine for 2 years use it on all my rifles

They are very good but also very very stretchy. Anything heavier than 8lb odd bounces up and down like a trampoline

Simple laws of physics: wide spreads the load a bit too much, if you don't want the rifle to move about when you walk.
Try a Citroen 2cv and a Ferrari in snow, the lemon will trounce the prancing pony, by virtue of the narrowness of the tyres - more grip.

Wide might be fine if grippy, but many seen on the market aren't grippy enough relative to their weight, then you have a comfy carried weight sliding all about you. Some of the deluxe niggeloh slings come to mind in this respect, they look lovely, but if you are actually carrying your rifle some distance on your shoulder, they are not what I'd go for.

Personally I tend toward lighter weight but sound kit, because of the terrain type and distances I go; if a 3-3,5kilo setup gets the job done, I don't personally feel the need to be carrying the extra weight. The profile up close on the sling I made is of a great surface area, micro checkering if you like, but dimples as shown below work pretty much every bit as well:

Because I'm carrying my roe sack, binoculars etc too, I prefer the 'multi purpose' shoulder area not to be unnecessarily encumbered by extra width I don't need. As ever, everyone has their own preferences; a 1" or so grippy sling that doesn't let the rifle move is mine, and if wide works well with you, then that's also fine.
Abbey England?
Trying to find a supplier with more colour options including dark green.

Thanks
