SELLERS OF FIREARMS PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Due to the recent event of a registered firearms owner having been held at knife point by two potential buyers of one of his advertised weapons Admin wishes to point out that although this was in no way attached to this site we would seriously recommend the following precautions being taken by any potential sellers of firearms.

1. Before even attempting to meet any potential purchaser, make sure you have proof of the potential purchasers full name, address, landline number, mobile number and email address.
2. Prior to meeting them ask for a copy of their FAC with proof of their suitability and permission to purchase the calibre of weapon you are offering for sale, via Email.
3. Do not accept or invite strangers into your home and show them your security measures or firearms unless you are absolutely confident that they are genuine.
4. If needs be make an arrangement to meet them at your local gun shop or RFD to show them the rifle.
5. Do not meet anyone on your own or in an area where you are isolated. Never invite them to your home. If they call round un anounced, turn them away, do not let them in.
6. Try and check them out with references before meeting up. The Shooting world is a small one, most people know others and who they are. Ask for references. If they are reluctant to send a copy of their FAC and their right to own the rifle, turn them away and report it to the police.
7. If you are in any way suspicious contact their local constabulary to enquire if they are genuine.

At all times be safe and careful, its unfortunate that we have people who are out to gain access to legally held weapons, but this is where its up to us to be extra vigilant and cautious. If in doubt BACK OUT.

Thank you for your advice and reminder, non of us can ever be over cautious about our possessions.

At the moment l am selling a number of items but they are all being sold through two different RFD’s in different parts of the country.

Kind regards.

Must have been very frightening for the person concerned and could easily have ended much worse..... A warning for us all - thanks for sharing.

Very worthwhile advice. I have to say aggravated burglary is a worry that detracts from the pleasure of shooting and firearm ownership.

I have just seen that a local gun shop (Brothers in Arms, Christchurch Dorset), have offered to be a host for locals to do their private face-to-face transactions. As a safe mutual location.
No charge.
That is fantastic news and frankly a service all reputable Gun Shops should offer now they have limited interest in a;- purchasing our surplus to requirement firearms or b;- selling them on a commission basis.

I'm sure we would all be happy to slip the shop owners a crisp note or two for their trouble?

I had someone very interested in my CZ HMR, agreed that we both could travel but wanted a safe place to meet. He approached a gun shop in Bristol area who were less than helpful. The odd thing we both needed other bits for other rifles or reloading stuff. They lost out , and we did not meet . Rifle still for sale

BC.

On a similar note, how does one go about checking out a rifle before purchase? I've seen a couple of reasonably, dare I say cheap, rifles that have tempted me; but it doesn't seem to be like buying a car where I can run the serial number through a database to make sure it's not stolen or the owner is who they say they are or am I missing something?

That's easily resolved by asking them to send you a photo of their licence, with the item listed.
If the photo looks odd in anyway (e.g. tipex), email their FLO department (details on web) and ask for conformation.
