I picked up a xq38f today and im wondering if i should keep putting it into the "sleep" mode between scaning or can I/should i leave it running all the time or will this burn it out?
Question for the thermal buffs

Leave it running, I brought a second battery not that I am out that long but run mine down to nearly out then swap it over then charge the other.

So litteral you guys turn ot on and leave it on and dont you the sleep/ screen saver mode
For foxing I am looking around all the time, so I want to be able to look at something without pressing a button.
I doubt you will damage or shorten the life of the unit by leaving it on or putting it on standby or switching it on & off. I think the decision is made by battery, what you're scanning for, how frequently you need to scan & how likely the light of the eyepiece might spook your quarry. In essence, just do what's best for the job in hand, after all that's what you got the unit for....

Leave it switched on and, if necessary, get a second battery.
Most failures in electronic equipment happen at switch on, so minimise the number of times you switch on!

Slightly off topic, can I ask - will long term use in automatic mode wear out the shutter faster than semi auto manual use?
The shutter is operated by a small servo and will wear out faster if left in auto mode.
I'd always recommend that Pulsar thermal users set the calibration mode to semi auto - on thermal scopes, it means the unit will not calibrate just as your'e about to pull the trigger.

If it's the old xq38 switch off because the unit gets hot when running that then causes graining in the image if it's the Helion it has a heat sink built in to combat the over heating problem image quality stays clear I still have the older xq had it three years never had any shutter problem use it most nights foxing

Depending on the length of time out and about I would buy another battery and leave on.
If you are thinking of buying a spare battery there are two types , a standard size the same as supplied with XQ39f and a larger capacity battery. I opted for the standard size battery, apart from cost the the dimensions of the other battery are larger and protrude out of the casing making handing not so manageable.

The battery will last for some 7-8 hours if in continuous use. How long are you out stalking? That will answer your question. Even if you do not have a spare, providing you don't forget to re-charge it after every outing, you'll be just fine with one battery.
