.22 Hornet Reloading

When I converted over to small rifle primers I didn't see any change in group size. Just in case anybody was wondering.
Also AA1680 is a good powder for the hornet if you haven't tried it . In west Tennessee where I live it is easier to find than Lil-Gun or H110/296 right now.
You won't get nearly the velocity with 1680, that you do with Lil' Gun. And Lil'Gun prefers SPP's...

In fact, I'd argue that Lil'Gun is the only reason the venerable old .22 Hornet is even still around and is as popular as it is in the US.

He's always been that way. I remember our own JAYB suggesting he hop out of the Rover and make his way through the briars to fetch a rabbit JAYB had dispatched. Looking at the thorny barricade, the kid said "What if I don't want to?"
JAYB cocked his head in pensive thought and replied, "Well. It'll hurt a lot less if you do...."
Discipline is a good thing, eh?~Muir

Sixteen-eighty just peaks out faster. Accuracy is great but you can run out of case life in a hurry if you push it. And yes: LIl Gun is the modern revival for the Hornet. You can scoop a case full, shake out just enough to start the bullet, and get great accuracy with minimal pressures. My Hornet loads are 100% full until I tap the case against the bench to settle the powder 1/16th inch to start the bullet. ~Muir

I just mentioned AA1680 because in these days of hoarding members of the Hornet Brotherhood might not be able to find Lil-Gun. I have seen 1680 at my local loading shop and I have had good success with it in the past. Muir you seem to have a lot of experience with the Hornet you might want to start a tread and discuss your experience with powders suitable for the Hornet. This would probably be beneficial to guys that can't find Lil-Gun

I have fired my tightest groups with 1680. Granted, they are minute of heartbeat smaller than Lil Gun groups, but the tape don't lie. Three shots .18 @ 100. Ten shots .66" CTC in a cross wind. (7 cuting each other in a ragged hole) Nothing wrong with 1680.~Muir

40gr V-Max with 12.6gr Lil Gun using RWS brass. 12.5gr using Winchester. Both around 3,000fps. Great little round.

SD and ES is usually pretty poor, but out to 200 yards makes very little difference. I have stretched things out to 400 yds but tend to limit vermin bashing to 300 yds and <200 yds for foxing.

Didn't have a great deal of success with H110. Still gave 3/4 of a tub that I might experiment with some day. Managed to get a group group using 45gr H&n bullets, but couldn't repeat it!

Also haven't played with crimping, but intend to at some stage - read good things.
