Leupold's New Scope

Leupolds have real reputation for toughness and holding zero on rifles that are bounced around on shoulders, backpacks in vehicles etc. For a hunting rifle confidence of toughness and ability to hold zero is paramount.

I have used Leupold scopes on other peoples rifles and I have always found them quite critical on eye placement. Admittedly I have never had one on a rifle set up for me. Optically they tend, to my eyes at least, have a matt type image as opposed to a gloss of say Schmidt & Bender. And I prefer German No4 reticle to the Duplex reticle.

In the US market their pricing and aftermarket service makes really good sense. European optics are expensive over there by comparison (although US produced Z3, Z5 and some Zeiss are competitive). UK market they are quite a bit more expensive.
Bored??
Makes a change from scouring the tinterweb looking for brexit sad news!!

:p Although..... It's interesting to see how the attitude to Meopta was back in the day. I like Leupold for look, feel and manliness, but I wouldn't rate the glass with Meopta, Swaro or Zeiss.

Leupold for me every time . When they let me down I will change , but I can't see that happening. Three rifles all have vx3 bins and range finder all leupold NO excuses

I have a Leupold MK something or other on my 308 RPR. It's been run through the mill. Banged around in the back of a pickup. Never shifted zero once. It's been on my RPR from the start. Won't be coming off any time soon.~Muir

Ended up with a couple of old Leopolds recently - vari-x II and m8. Couldn’t get them off the rifles fast enough - just ok in daylight but unusable when the light started dropping. I’m sure VX7s are great, but personally I reckon you Can’t get safer than S&B

Beware of Meopta. Had a guy up about 4 years ago brand new rifle and brand new Meopta scope, scope was useless, it would not hold true. Took it back in the end and exchanged it for a Leupold.

Buy a Leupold from the states its $2.3c to the £1 you cant loose.
Have had x2 meopta scopes for about 10years, good glass and never had any issues.
Great for general allround scopes, swaro beats them at low light though.

Africa, I had a client whos Swaro packed up due to dust. Never had a problem with Leupold ever. And thats from -27 in Finland to Scotland in the pis..ing rain to the heat of the Kalahari desert, both north and south.
Good for you malc , I’ve looked through and used quite a few while living in Canada . While mechanically they were pretty good when put side by side with the top European makes the low light performance just wasn’t there . And that’s what matters to me

I have a top Zeiss on my 308, but in all honesty I dont see hardly if any difference between that and one of the VX-L scopes I have on 3 of my rifles. I do know one thing, Leupold honour their lifetime gaurantee. Not that I have any fail on me, but many years back a friend dropped his and Leupold fixed it no problem and no cost. One would hope that this still applies today.

i have 4 mk 4 leupold,s, ive had them for nigh on 25 years, none have let me down, and before you start saying i should get a swarovski or ziess i have them scopes also but i have a soft spot for my leupolds bs

Leupold scopes are good honest scopes built to work. I had one of the VX7 scopes it worked fine my main gripe was a fussy eye box that I just couldn’t get on with.

They are a big brand that have now somewhat caught up with the trends the line of MK 5 scopes are by all accounts excellent. The current VX 6 line seems to perform very well. I have a friend who happily uses an old 3-10 leupold on a Parker hale 308 and shoots more than his fair share of Deer with the combo.

I now run many different brands of scope and don’t see much difference in them. From a Meopta Optika 6 to a minix zp 5 the difference in ability is marginal and likely not worth the difference in price.

My current favourite is the 4-32 NX 8 good glass good turrets and built like a tank. I’m sure I would be just as happy if I had went with a MK5

That’s great , maybe it’s my eyes just that to my eyes my schmidt and zeiss are better in low light than Leupold , that being said one of the best low light scopes I’ve looked through was ( to me ) a meopta 7x50 brilliant at first and last light , I know there’s some big fans of leupold but for me for the money there’s better scopes in that price range

I would agree with this - I know Leupold’s warranty is good - (I had one) but it’s no better than the customer service you get from swaro, ok, they won’t replace a scope FOC but I doubt Leupold would if it was Ill handled.

I definitely saw a difference at last light..but that could be a persons eyes, one may suit different eyes.

Gixer

Only had two scopes fail so far, a Kahles tactical K624 and an old 3-9x50 VXII Leupold. Both were repaired. Still think the Leupold are built incredibly strong for the light weight they are. Only have two Leupolds at the moment one 1-4x20 firedot and a 4-12x50 firedot. Both are OK, not great. I hate push button scope illumination switches with timer functions... thought the older S&B drum is the best solution, also used by Meopta.

My only gripe about the higher priced Loopy I used was (As previously noted) the very critical eye box.
Most annoying when varying the power and having to adopt a slightly different head position to get the view just right.
