Thermal or night vision

The only time I've ever had an issue identifying what a heat signature is, is until the time it moves, and then you see the silhouette, and the way it moves.

Anything that I would shoot at night, is easy to identify, even the difference between male boar, and sows.

The only people who appear to struggle with thermal, are those who appear to have spent little time with it.

I'd love to see peoples opinions, if thermal, and NV were the same price, and price didn't have any influence :-|

I’d agree....I was in the spot with thermal and id and shoot with nv camp for a long time...eventually I splashed on a Thermion...the more time you spend behind the thermals the more familiar the sight picture becomes...these days the nv only ever comes out for a month or so when the lambs first go out....

Went to a thermal scope 4 years ago and no way would I go back to an IR based NV setup. I can swap my unit from rimfire for bunnies to centrefire for foxes. I do not typically shoot at more than 200m at night, in fact, I prefer to and have, shot the majority of my foxes between 70m and 140m, at these distances you can be sure of what you are pointing the sharp end at! I am not dissing your Drones, Pards, Wraiths, ATN's, Pulsars, etc., but thermal has made it so much easier for me personally not only to very quickly pick out quarry but to safely shoot them. I have in the past had Photon, Nite Site and other IR based kit but wouldn't go back to it.

I was spotting with a Pard 019 and shooting with a Pard NV008lrf which worked well. Then purchased an Axion XM3ps. Brilliant. As some people have mentioned when you swop from your thermal spotter to the nv it sometimes difficult to find your target. Now I am getting used to the thermal spotter will defo go down the thermal scope. A matter of saving some pennies. Frankieboy what scope are you using?

I am using an ATN Mars HD 640 2.5-25x50, best but most expensive bit of kit I have purchased, has been faultless. IMG_20210202_135944.webp

For a newbie to rifles this is a fascinating read! I have always just used a lamp even with air guns etc but considering NV on my new 223- lots to read and learn about! I may well put up a post and see if anyone local uses thermal/nv combo and see if they mind me hovering one evening!

Thermal all the way for me. It's just getting better and better at all price points!

I personally love a thermal rifle scope, having used one of one type or another pretty much for all of my night shooting for 6 years now!

It's convenient, all self contained, no IR to fiddle with and works in conditions where NV or even a lamp would be 'blind'.

Cheers
