Chaps, I'm after some bins for my Dad's birthday. The price limit is £100 and I was wondering if there was a common general concensus on what might be a good buy in this range.

What do you reckon?

Cheers

Steve

Well I am afraid for £100 you wont get much, but if that was my budget this would be my chioce "Carl Zeiss Jena Jenoptem 7x50" vintage but none the less truly excellent glasses I used a pair of these for many years before I got my current leica 7x42s you should get a good pair of ebay. but ensure they are genuine before you bid, and best of luck with your search

just check they have DDR marked on them and have 7 digit serial nos

you will get a secondhand pair of minox if your lucky and you wont get better than that they are great

I agree with the Ebay recommendation. I have a couple of pairs of Zeiss vintage bins. The only real difference in optics is the weight. The glass itself is as refined as ever.
You can find 7x50 and 8x40 - the 10x50 are massive! Beware of bins that have been taken apart, but don't worry about fogging too much - it can be cleaned out by a specialist and won't necessary cost the earth.
Remember these bins (if you use the National Archive price measures) would have cost £1100+ new. I am surprised we do not see them discussed more often on here.
:tiphat:

Had a quick look and you should look at a pair like:
220761852622 or 300540681849
This is not a recommendation, but I would look at these if it was me - I have nothing to do with the seller.

zeiss jena for me too!! off ebay if my budget were £100..far better than any new bins for that price!!

If you can stretch a bit more than 100 you could get a good pair of Hawke bins. I bought mine for £190 and they're great, I know that's way out of your price range but they do do other cheaper versions.

What's he planning to use them for? If stalking he wants good uns so £100 voucher for an optics shop might be a good idea then he could add to it if he wished.

I agree Zeiss Jena, or minox if you really want a new pair as opposed to s/h you should get a pair of opticron for your money good binos for that kind of money

The second pair don't have a seven digit number or ddr mark. Does this mean they are not originals?

These are well worth a look..
Rilfes Unlimited - IOR 7X40 military Binos

The ebay seller both me and my friend have used is called oldy something or other and is based in romania. No problems with either transaction. My mate got the non rangefinder version which are the same as the ones sold by border barrels and are a bit lighter than mine.
IOR 7x40 Binoculars
I'd love to compare them to zeiss, minox etc to see how they stack up but for the money I think you'll struggle to do better. We paid about £120 for ours and condition wise they are mint and unmarked.

I like the look of these, it would be interesting to compare them against my Minox BL's

I bought a pair of Minox 8x42 for less than £100 new from the USA through ebay, the 10x42 were only a couple of quid more. Just make sure they tick the gift section on the delivery sheet! You can pick them up in the UK for about £150 if you look about.

i have a pair of these and we have tried them against the hg,s minox and honestly cannot tell a difference between either specs. i went on the minox website and the difference seems to be in the gases thats filled inside the bins the higher spec models are filled with argon and the lower end are filled with nitrogen the argon molecules are larger so it takes alot longer for the argon to escape hope this helps, wayne
