RCBS Trim Pro II

So I bought another white elephant invaluable reloading toy tool.

The RCBS Trim Pro II.

Arrived a couple of days ago from Mcavoy Guns, along with some cleaning rods and jags.

I have put it together and fitted the pilot for .243.

It does not want to accept the brass in the "universal holder". Before I take a mallet to it and instruct my solicitors...anyone had similar issues with this?

I have watched a variety of videos on it on Youtube and have even resorted to reading the instructions!

Is it a fault in the kit? Is it a fault in the operator?

Can’t help but thanks for reminding me I have one albeit without a universal holder!

Send it back and buy the Forster Original Case Trimmer. It comes with individual collets for various cartridge cases right up to 500NE

Have you tried a larger calibre in the universal holder ? see if it holds that.
The reason l say larger is because the instructions say .250 and up to .625 l don’t know if it will lock and hold in place a .243 case.

You are depressing the lever before offering the case up..........just asking.

When you place your .243 case in the holder is it just spinning round.....not held firmly ? you don’t say.

By the way l don’t own one.

I have not tried any other calibres.

I am depressing (tempted to put a full stop there) the lever and it does not appear to open the jaws sufficiently.

Herewith are the calibres that the damn thing is meant to accept.

I have passed the problem to my son who is good with a sledgehammer and am awaiting his findings. I suspect that it may be a return as "not fit for purpose" but just wanted to see if there was an easy fix out there.

Let us all know if you can fathom your problem, l would be interested in the results.

Ah ha......see where you were coming from with the full stop you mentioned.

I’ve had a similar issue but with 300NM. I have to ‘waggle’ the brass to get it into the shell holder and then very carefully insert the pilot and begin cutting. I’m in no way convinced that it cuts square but once set up it does give consistent results. I had a nightmare with it when I’d incorrectly put in a 6.5 rather than a 7mm pilot for 7RM.

I have the same unit (with carbide cutters), silly question but are you clamping that wood base down? it's very difficult to get enough pressure on the arm to open the jaws if the trimmer isn't fastened down.

Son No.1 is fitting it to a wooden base, in order that that wooden base can be clamped to a desk.

Stand by for updates...

I have the unit without the universal holder and I found that I had to use the next size up shell holder, at which point it worked perfectly.

I think the instructions refer to the case head diameter . I've just bought one myself and haven't really had a chance to play . Eeek

Ah.....as l said l don’t have one myself, l own a Lyman case trimmer and never had a problem with it, again I would be interested in how it works out for you, please let us know if it does what it claims !

I nearly bought the Hornady😖life would have been so much simpler.

Pretty sure my unit is the same and I do .204, .308 and 6.5 creedmoor with no issues.
Obviously your feminine .243 has the same head size as my more manly .308 so I'd suggest operator error 😍

I am afraid, this post won't help and assume the radio silence today mean the OP has now instructed his finest legal team. The first photo looks like a Mamod accessory..... where does the meths and the drive belt go?

Right Ho,

The news from No. 1 son is that the unit is indeed not fit for purpose.
I have emailed McAvoy Guns to apprise them of this and will return the unit to them this week, for either a refund or replacement.

He had even mounted it on a wood block in order to secure it down and apply maximum pressure to the lever...
