After 42 years of chopping up deer without little more than the odd nick, Today I managed to slice through the side of my index just above the knuckle right done to the bone,
How!! Washing the dishes and cutlery after carving up a chicken
Spent 6 hours in A&E going through various procedures ( Which i won't bore you with ) It appears i have cut through a nerve so now have to wait to go into surgery within the next couple
of days

Ouch! It can happen in a split-second, as I know to my cost after having a sheep kick a pair of hoof trimmers through the back of my hand a year or so ago. I didn't bother with A&E as I stupidly thought it would sort itself out. Still suffering nerve pain, pins and needles, and numbness. It serves to prove deep cuts really need proper medical attention. Glad you got it seen to, and hope it heals clean and fast

a mate years ago asked me to sharpen his knife, having sharpened said knife he proceeded to shave his arms, now this guy was one hairy bloke, i went to put the kettle on and he came running up holding his left clean shaven arm wrapped in a old rag, anyway a quick and lengthy drive and wait at the a&e and 8 stitches and a tetanus jab which he said hurt more than the cut, he never asked me again to put an edge on his knife mmmm? bs

There but for the Grace of God go I. I cut my left hand index finger knuckle badly twice during lockdown last year. The first time was chopping kindling with an axe that was too big for the job and no gloves. The second time I was pruning branches with a wee Bahco saw - I threw a branch to the side but unfortunately the saw was in the way too. Again, I was stupidly wearing no gloves, but I did have them in my pocket
First time I went to hospital because the cut was so deep but I had just missed the tendon, so I was glued up with superglue and sent on my way. The second time my pride would not let me go to hospital again, so I fixed it myself. My knuckle on that finger now gets a bit sore when it's cold.
What do I do differently now? I can't afford to keep cutting my fingers so I wear work gloves for all sharp work, or a cut proof glove under a nitrile for gralloching and butchery. I've also stopped chopping kindling with an axe and now use a billhook with a wooden home-made mallet.
The benefit of sharp tools is that they work so much better. The downside is that it only takes a second of inattention or stupidity to cause proper damage.
