Botswana - Plains Game?

Morning all, I hunted plains game in Namibia in 2018, and am starting to think about making another trip to Africa in 2023. I'd like to visit a different country, and Botswana is on the list. I'd be interested to hear from those who've hunted there, particularly for plains game.

I haven't hunted there but know you will pay a fortune to get any heads out of the country. Its a big monopoly with one company offering the service. Shame, as the hunting is meant to be amazing.

Around at the AfricanHunting forum frequented by a few of us is a company called Nkwe Safaris offering a management hunt. Compared to the management hunting I have done in Namibia several times it’s a bit eyewateringly expensive. But ! There is a good variety of animals offered. Might be worth a try.

Thanks; I've made contact with Nkwe. My only concern is that Carrie's Law might have been enacted by then, so a non-trophy hunt might be the safest option.

Apparently the cost of shipping trophies out of Botswana is eye watering. There is only one shipper so you’re caught by the short and curlies.

yes, Jaco runs a very reputable business. The packages I advertise in Namibia and RSA is in line with Botswana and not expensive at all...on the trophy preparation and export of it, now that is a different story!

Thanks for the info, I'll be in touch.

Botswana is expensive. I’d recommend Mozambique or Zambia

I'd like to hunt other countries before I eventually can't. If one was wanting to investigate hunting Mozambique or Zambia, where would you start?

Happy to tell you about our place in Mozambique over the phone if you want to chat, @MJ75.

Kind regards,

Carl

Hunted Botswana in 1990 :old: At the time I was with Gordon Cundells crowd along the edge of the Caprivi Strip. An awe inspiring country and the Okavango Delta is a jewel to be hold. Moved camp and then hunted in the Kalahari as well on the same trip with the Bushmen. Great memories.
Its always been an expensive place to hunt or visit.

The same Cundell that was mauled by lion in Zambia?
Good pro if it's the same bloke👍

Interesting. Chipman was mauled by a wounded lion his client Wes Hixon shot. Chipman’s shot luckily broke its jaw as it charged him. Wes managed to find a clear shot after it was on Peter fir about 30 seconds. Still some nasty injuries. Video on internet somewhere

Cundell that we knew was culling lion on a cattle ranch when he was nailed. Grabbed it by the tongue, bitten to hell but lived to tell the tale.

Same. He had been in a bad accident in a Landrover as well. Funnily enough he turned up at the Museum I curated some years back, when it was closed to the public. He was with his daughter and son in law and the new grandchild. Took him round the collection of big game, and a few days later he sent me a copy of his new book on Lions he had encountered and hunted. I was most grateful for his kind gift, but I wished he had signed it.

He also knew Capstick very well, who I also met a couple of times, prior to his passing whilst I was in the states.

I have along with many others some great memories of meeting people and hunting with them over the years. One day I will have to sit down a write a book
