.22 LR non toxic

here we are then first try out with Norma HP and the new segmented rounds with the Anschutz8B0339BB-1C77-460B-BF6B-5DDCDB23EA5D.webp

shot off a clamped standing tripod at exactly 50 yds using the black dot as aim point in the middle of a 50mm target

target on left CCI lead segmented quiet and grouping ok smack on aim point

middle target Norma hollow point. 1’ high and stringy and noticeably noisy

right hand target new Norma segmented reasonably good grouping, noisy and 1’ high

The norma Ammo is greased up to the eyeballs, using the Annie no problems in a blaser 22 it jams up

going to give the new segmented a run out after re zeroing over the next two nights to see what it’s like on rabbits for knockdown and carcase damage will post some more pics up

Just in from rabbiting

using the Norma new non lead segmented rounds, they are a bit loud but on head shots no different on carcase damage, same as the CCI rounds despite the hike in speed, they remained stable and accurate nothing not to like about it apart from the noise - they are a keeper, pretty happy with these used them out to about 70 yds all good.

The hollow point are destined for the target shooting paper to use them up and never to be seen again, i tried different ranges, grouping didn’t improve at all still stringing the shot, these rounds definitely not for a Annie or blaser 22

Thanks for that. Am I right in thinking that the eco power are good, but the eco speed, not so good? If so, I’ll look out for eco power and give them a go.😀👍

Hi SB

pretty convinced the hollow point don’t work in the 22’s I used, in all honesty they didn’t tighten up on a 25 yds target and at 75 it was scattered the same as the 50 yd target, the segmented ammo I’ve re zeroed the Annie and will use them through that permantly overall not a bad result

only downside they come with a greasy oil covering, I’ll just get the box of 50 a tip out onto a cloth to clean most of it up before usingi

overall pleased with the new Ammo, it’s a wee bit faster, segmented hopefully will reduce any ricochets to next to nothing - time will tell, it’s off to a good start

Yerr, thanks for that. I’ll give the hollow points a miss, but I will give the segmented ones a try, if and when I come across some. I’m expecting them to gradually become more widely available in the near future anyway. Good of you to take the time to report on them, very useful food for thought 👍

No problem, I will have to use them when pushed into it, so a useful exercise for me at least I’ve got a round and a rifle that handles them ok, have to live with the noise bit I suppose

Copper was used years ago ie Copper nails used to kill trees so where is the toxic logic,

Strange old world matey, smart motorways was hailed as the future for motorists, now just a few years down the road, its now recognised as a failure and creates more hazards and staff to maintain them to make them viable than ever before.

I wonder who makes this stuff up, bloody ridiculous state of affairs

Don’t know when the forestry enterprises will insist on non toxic ammo on the leases to be sure it’s not far away

Regarding the noise, I think the lighter lead free bullets might need to be loaded as .22 shorts to make reliable and consistent subsonic loads? I’m sure the manufacturers will come up with a good subsonic lead free load before too long. Until then, it looks like these norma’s will be useful anyway.

Unless you are only talking about .22 this is a pointless argument. What metal is it that is wrapped around the lead core of your centrefire ammunition?

TRUE Just another point to so many pointless arguments, for me its just about another control and another financial hit, What next.

I tried the shorts round in normal lead and realistically I’m not sure it would consistently be accurate, i use my 22 rimmy out to a max of 70 yds which I think might be a bit stretchy for a short round

reducing the speed might also create a bouncer, probably a reason they hiked up the speed to stabilise the round, i shot the rounds out to seventy yards the segmented was good grouping at this range and a good knockdown on rabbits the hollow point was just sub a 2” group, that’s not all that good and not for me, they may group better in a different make of rifle
manufacturers Will I guess bring out other makes and types in various speeds shortly, just a matter of getting the right one that suits your rifle

I asked CCI and RWS about this. I only got a reply from RUAG (RWS) but they said they were looking into development of a lead free subsonic round but not to expect anything until the end of this year at least.

Re the noise, are they any noisier than a .17 HMR which seems to be the darling of a lot of bunny bashers. Are they any noisier than say RWS 22lr High Velocity ammo?

And looking at the groups posted above, I would expect similar variation in group size across different brands of conventional 22 ammo - eg, my 22 Brno doesn't like CCI ammo at all, nor remington (looks like a shotgun pattern), but shoots tiny little groups with RWS and Eley ammo - both HV and subsonic.

The non toxic rounds are a lot louder than eley subs and also CCI segmented standard and a little wee bit noisier than 17 mach 2 i would say the noise of a HV stinger which isn’t bad overall it’s what you want as a bunny basher. i also use the 17 mach 2 a lot on rabbits and that noise from that doesn’t scare off many rabbits after a shot
HMR i don’t have one , I use a 17 hornet at and over 80 to 240 yds
no issue with noise due to the distance

Just an update - had a very good night tonight out on the rabbits using the non tox segmented rounds in the Annie

really pleased with accuracy and carcase damage, they are a keeper

Anyone near wanting to try half of a half of a brick of the non tox hollow point and can collect FOC

give me a shout, i can’t use them in my rifles
