Which 17hmr?

Hi all,

Just after opinions on which .17hmr people think is best for the money. I’ve (sort of) got the list down to either a CZ 452/455 or the tikka TX1…

I know of course it’s best to get hands on with both, but just wanted users opinions or any advice on things to be aware of with either. It would also be good to hear from anyone who’s had both and whether the tikka is worth the extra money.

I have a CZ in .22 which is great and has been solid for years, lso have a Tikka T3 which is great to handle.

Any advice is welcome, as well as other rifle suggestions if people think there is a better option out there!

Thanks in advance…

Don't discount the Weihrauch 60 or 66 (especially Jadgmatch) sublime triggers and accuracy - only real downside of HW and Anschutz is the 4 round magazine.

I've had my Anschutz since 2007. It's shot some brilliant groups and is very well made.

My only criticism is the none thumbhole stocks are a bit bland and are stained. Wood quality on the CZs is better.

I went for a Browning synthetic with a lefthand TBolt - 10shots and a spare 10shot mag in the butt
The trigger was a nightmare, but now I've sorted it, took some time filing and bending but all came good
Bedding bolt tension was also an issue as well as getting the right moderator
I'm righthanded but the lefthand bolt makes it very very fast shooting
It's now a stayer...

I too have a T3X and a CZ 452 .22lr.
I’ve got the TX1 HMR and it’s as you expect in relation to the T3X it’s pretty much identical BUT it feeds awful, you can have 3 rabbits in view, shoot one, then the next round doesn’t find the chamber and you have to drop the mag to sort it, far from ideal if a quick follow up was needed on a random fox.
I’ve messed with it and think it’s the mag, just haven’t got round to buying another.
If I was buying a new one from and RFD I’d ask to see a full mag cycled before buying.

The CZ452 HMR was one of the most accurate rifles I ever owned. I now have 17's in WSM and Hornet and am inclined to agree with Jax......get a 17 Hornet. Much, much more capable than the HMR and moderates very well indeed.

I had a cz 452 it was very , very accurate! However I intendly dispose the calibre in rf , its either too fast at shorter rages , leading to premature expansion wounding at longervranges it stopped expanding ( around 150)
The ammo is now too expensive against the 22 hornet which is very easy to reload and better

The 452 and 455 do have some scope issues where the bolt throw angle makes it catch some eye pieces, I went for the 457, its great.

The bolt lift in some of the CZ's is way too high.....mind you, if one can tolerate the bolt on a Savage Bmag.........🥴

I just bought a Anschutz 1517 thumbhole stock in .17hmr. My first .17HMR I’ve owned and very impressed with it. My only regret I wish I bought it sooner instead of my .22LR. The groupings at 100m are easily cloverleafing.

I have a CZ455 in 17HMR. Not flashy but it does the job. If you're hunting there's not much difference in the various models so its more about how the gun "feels" to you. Went out to but a Tikka TX1 but it just didn't feel right for me. Picked up the CZ455 which was the next in the rack and it just fitted and felt right.

Anschutz seems to be getting a lot of votes… I understand people’s suggestions for the hornets but I currently don’t reload and HMR ammo seems to be cheaper and easier to find…
