Buying or even finding bullets

Well then. Just spent a very long time on t’internet trying to locate my favourite bullets - Sierra 308 125 gns and Sierra 6.5 120 gns Prohunters - long story short “out of stock” seems to be the story. To my delight I did find an RFD who had the last 2 boxes in the universe of 125gns .308 so delighted with my endeavours I went through the usual rigmarole process and ordered and paid for them. Great, super, delighted… ah, not so fast FB - 10 minutes later I received an email saying:-
“Unfortunately we are currently not shipping any bullet heads to Northern Ireland due the lack of clarity from the government on what they class as 'restricted items', and we run the risk of possibly having the goods confiscated in transit. Generally speaking these types of goods require an export license or special customs forms to be shipped to mainland Europe, and until the government clarifies their position our hands are tied.”.
Soooo the last two boxes were almost mine but at the last moment a certain well-known RFD snatched defeat from the jaws of my victory AND even suggested that this corner of the UK is part of mainland Europe! I am not a political animal in any sense but last time I looked out the window I still lived in the United Kingdom, gosh - I even have a British Passport, my wife is a Londoner and until her retirement was the Regional Manager for the UK Passport Office in Belfast, 15 miles away, maybe someone should spread the word….
Undaunted I pressed on and sent them a response, along the lines of “for Christ’s sake many RFDs are perfectly happy to send brass and bullets to NI so what is different with you?”. Suffice to say nil result so plan B swung smoothly into operation “will you send them to my pal in Perthshire and I will get him to post them?”. And so it was, they are even as we speak winging their way to me via Perthshire. In short some dealers won’t post to me (nothing personal - I hope) but many (thank Christ) will and without any issues or bollo about “confiscations”, bless them. Apart from the clear disappointment I felt, the big question for me is why does such confusion still reign? Maybe it is just me but when I look back over the many successful deliveries I have received over the last 9 months I really do wonder what the hell is going on. Answers on a postcard…..
Apologies for the rant chaps but a certain bodily fluid really is boiling.

Sent stuff to N.I and it never got there ! ended up refunding and so i'v payed near twice for the goods that the PO in NI never delivered but too add salt they then never had the brains to send back to the return address T.B.O.C . never again.

Genuine question...

If I want to buy ammunition, I drive to the nearest RFD, pay, they sign my FAC and I'm on my way. How does it work online, with regards to the FAC?

I won't send anything shooting related to N.I either after a parcel I sent containing unfired brass and projectiles was lifted.

Triple loss, lose the goods, refund the payment and postage+packadging fee gone too.

No thanks!
And did you pursue it with the outfit that you used to deliver (or not) said items? If not why not?

You cannot buy ammunition online, it has to be face to face, or sent to a local RFD for you to collect but I expect the local RFD would charge a fee for receiving the ammunition from whoever you purchased it from.

Hmmm. As per post no. 6. Too many people think that “Ireland” and “Northern Ireland“ are the same. For clarity - the first is not part of the UK and indeed reloading there is illegal so anything of that ilk will be seized; the second i.e. NI is an integral part of the UK and you can post anything to it at the same rate as Glasgow, Darlington or Dover with Royal Mail with the same implications. I have had soooo many deliveries from mainland RFDs and SD chaps and sent many parcels of brass and/or bullets to the rest of the UK without any issues so why is it an “issue” for some members? Just curious.

Selling and refunding seems the main issue feller . Fully understand NI is part of the UK well unless it comes to owner ship of some types of firearm that is ? pmsl

Used to go over a lot back in the day ! Even got a free hand of ulster coin from the Mayor in the 70/80's ;) hand some best times in the steamer bar in Bangor :norty:

Serious question - given that NI is still part of the UK, why are the good folk who live there allowed to possess handguns (in some cases for personal defence as well I think?)?

The reason they weren't banned as with mainland UK is they were and still are needed for personal protection.

On the back of that clubs can still operate and you can still join and get a handgun for club use.

OK, fair enough. But there are parts of the mainland where personal protection would be handy... Accept that there are special circumstances over there though.

Not quite the case. PPWs are issued in exceptional circumstances and only where a clear threat is known - in these circumstances they will never be “banned”. These are absolutely not related to pistols held for legitimate reasons i.e. as a member of a registered club and wishing to participate in pistol competitions. For simplicity think of c/f rifle ownership in the mainland as a member of a registered club then for NI add/substitute pistols - .22 up to 44 magnum - for competition only. That and of course the fact that we are much more law-abiding and good looking of course…..

Just a wild guess, but could Brexit have something to do with increased difficulties in moving stuff (incl. ammo) around?

Thanks but like so many being advertised does not mean in stock - "add to wish list" with no date promised! At least some RFDs are honest enough to say not in stock, others however........
