Petrol Panic Buying Observations

Filled up My Disco in Bedfordshire for the drive to Scotland queues at every petrol station. Drove up yesterday for 2 weeks stalking and hols in great scenery, good run up no hold ups other that the “decade long” M1 and M6 roadworks restrictions. Simple observation the further north we got no sign of “ Panic” at petrol stations, stopped at Tebay services the place was rammed with cars drove straight in for petrol half the pumps had no cars at them. Observation being ”Northerners don’t panic” !!!

It’s the media that starts it all off. There is no shortage of fuel but there is a shortage of drivers They have and would have coped with normal deliveries but when this happens it just exagerates the situation. Food will be next as I hear they say we are going to struggle at Christmas time. People nowadays have no consideration for anyone else typical so long as I am alright attitude. I know some people local to me that can’t get fuel and havnt got any Red diesel for me.

Pardon me for a little observation but there is not a shortage of drivers. The big hoo-ha recently was about HGV drivers from Europe leaving the UK to work in Europe instead. To drive a tanker does not only require an HGV license but also an ADR license which certifies an individual to drive tankers (among other hazardous goods-laden vehicles). I work quite regularly as a setting out engineer and civil surveyor on fuel station forecourts and although it is anecdotal, I have never once come across a foreign tanker driver. Of the dozens that have come into the forecourts when I've been working on in England, they have all been as English as tea and crumpets. I'm sure it is the same for the other countries.

The media did start it all off and I want them held accountable, but the self-fulfilling prophecy completely lies with muppets racing out to fill their cars, their wife and kids cars, their jerry cans, lawnmowers etc all at the same time

Agree 100% my brother is an ADR driver and he is laughing his socks off to the dribble the media are pumping out this
load of crap, this country relishes in made up shite and a big percentage of them believe the crap they continually manufacture and the chaos continues

This will be deliberate for one reason or another. Created by those that will benefit financially from the madness
True that 👍 could be a subtle nudge that electric cars weren't affected by the recent chaos.... although energy prices are set to rocket so they too will have their day.
One good thing from this has been - the kids with their pop and bang cars and the midlife crisis power ranger brigade havent been screaming past our pleasant little village this weekend 😂

Being an artic driver myself with adr I can tell you there is a shortage of drivers. As you stated that you had not encountered any foreign drivers on tankers that is probably true but the vacuum they have left In the industry as a whole has seen jobs advertised with big wages attached so a lot of job jumping is happening. It’s easier to get a driver to tramp with containers or bulkers but getting tanker drivers is not as easy. Tanker driving used to be one of the best paid but at the moment it’s not always the case.

Possibly but is there not a chance that tanker drivers are moving across to other HGVs that were previously driven by Europeans, perhaps attracted by better pay?

Lots of knock ons in life at the moment

If everybody switched to electric in the next 6 months the national grid would fail, the government knows this.

The government want us to switch to electric so that they can suck electricity out of EVs and stop the grid failing. What would fail is the rest of the economy.
They've got the same mentality as we had with covid. Sacrifice everything to save the NHS; sacrifice everything to save the misleadingly named National Grid and achieve a bogus "net-Zero" target.

I was under the impression that the disruption was due to strike action over pay?

There was a petrol station owner on the radio the other day saying the tanker driver shortage is because they’re not the best paid drivers and many have jumped ship for better pay.
I also read somewhere that the driver shortage has been predicted for many years as the average age is well up there and there is little young blood getting qualified.
