Seeing the reaction to shot with a .260?

Hi all,

I shoot a .270win and have just bought a 7mm Rem Mag for some rangier shots. When I shoot at a deer, the recoil is such that seeing the animals reaction to the shot is nigh on impossible. Not something that has bothered me particularly but I am starting to wonder if I could rebarrel the .270 to something with a bit less recoil? I have a real hankering for a .260 rem and wondered how they recoil? It’ll be a sporter barrelled rifle for stalking so will remain fairly light, it’s a Sako 85 with laminated stock. Will I be able to see what I’ve shot through the scope?

I need to shoot 100gr copper and would prefer a short action round

I have a pretty light .260 built on a Sako 85 s (could do with it being an M really) in a McMillan stock. It’s a pretty skinny fluted barrel and you won’t generally see the shorter range things fall over if you are too zoomed in but it’s not unmanageable - great rifle and calibre though and the thing is usually lying dead where it’s meant to be so I’m not worried. That’s moderated.

Just started using 120gn TTSX and shot maybe 10 deer since I changed - seem to work just fine. Used 120gn A max and ELDM previously and they worked too.

If I was doing it all again and a really smart .260 hadn’t come up for sale I would have gone creedmoor - better factory ammunition choice and a better short action proposal

I have a 6.5x55 SE so not a million miles away chambering-wise. With 120 or 130 gns Sierras, a moderate load of N160 and using an Utra moderator I can see the strike every time.

I’ve killed a veritable pile of deer with 260’s over the years using many different bullets in several rifles and a couple bolt action hand rifles . Used bullet weights from 100-130 grains and all were equally effective as long as I did my part . Many were dead right there , but as you’d expect some went a ways before going down .

Recon it depends on the rifle set-up. I have had 223's that I could not see the strike. Shot a 50cal and saw my bullets strike. My well set up stalking rifles I can see the split second of impact even though i hold the rifle very light.

6.5x55 with 120g Nosler BT going at 2800fps, I struggle to see the shot strike. This is my stalking rifle and it's not that light.

Hmmm. Probably down to driving the 120 so fast - 2650fps works really well for me, reduced recoil and still dead deer. No brainer!

I can sometimes deer a deer crumple but as EJG says, it’s a split second and then gone at shorter ranges, certainly wouldn’t be spotting the fall of the shot

The further away they are the more I find you see of the impact.

I’ve found that 120gn going 2800 ish works pretty nicely.

That's loading for accuracy foxy 👍
Aye I get that thanks.
I blend that with comfort and confidence in my proven time-served loads which are for toxic monolithic err, traditional hunting bullets in .222, 6.5, .308, 7.62x54R and 8 mm. Copper of course needs to be driven faster by most accounts though I have used Yew Tree 112s in the 6.5 but not chronographed them thus far. In theory the lighter copper bullet would offset some of the recoil of the (presumably) heavier charges……

Could you see the bullet strike them??

I can say the same about .270’s but they’ve all been very jumpy when the trigger is pulled. I used to shoot a .243 and could see everything.

Thanks Shabz for raising an interesting thread. I have the same problem with my Tikka T3 .270. I too would like a lighter recoiling rifle, partly because I also want to see fall of shot. I pretty much have to keep hold of my 270 at the moment so one option I've considered is getting a better designed stock i.e a PSE which might handle the recoil better. - I appreciate I may not see the fall of shot but the rifle might have completed the recoil cycle before the deer disappeared from sight so I might be able to gauge the reaction to shot.

Read and marvel!

This is a fascinating thread, raising for discussion an issue that has been at the back of my mind of late. I've never seen the bullet strike with my suppressed 6.5x55 (Sako 75 with largish S+B scope, ie not a light setup).

I wonder could other factors be at play here, beyond the usually suspected ones (calibre, ammo weight/speed, rifle weight/stock design, mod type, etc...)? I'm thinking specifically about how tight (or not) various people hold the rifle and, maybe more so, is it possible some people might even involuntarily blink at the moment the shot is taken?

Moderated?

I use a 6.5x55 with 120 NBTs at 2860, sl5 moderator, always see the shot, same as the creedmoor shooting 129s at similar speed through a jet z.

Not so much with the .280 or .308.

It will be a lot to do with grip on the rifle and fit I would guess.
