"New" SLR for the British Army

It was a great rifle, a fantastic rifle! For some! For it allowed Margaret Thatcher to privatise and then sell off the Royal Enfield to her cronies at British Aerospace for about £6 Million who then immediately closed the site and sold it for building for £36 Million whilst ensuring continued profits for them saddling the British Army with a sack of cack. It is interesting to look at who else bought the thing. Except you'll have to look pretty hard as apart from the Jamaica Defence Force who were given theirs free (whereas the Jamaica Police who had to actually pay cash money for their weapons chose the American M16 system BTW) I don't think anyone did. But Thatcher's cronies did very nicely thank you.
Hi.
Fwiw.

'Another interesting point to highlight is that there are a number of users of this platform, which enhances its credibility as a weapons platform. As part of British Aid, Zimbabwe had the SA-80, it has been used by Bolivia, in particular by its Special Forces, by Jamaica since 1992, Mozambique, and Nepal both part of British military aid, and Papua New Guinea. Over territories include Gibraltar as it’s the standard rifle for the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, and also used in Bermuda by the Royal Bermuda Regiment'.

"As part of British Aid"

That's correct we gave it away, as we didn't have a lot of luck selling it.
As I mentioned previously we couldn't even get the Falklands island defense force to adopt the Sa80 just after we had liberated them. The ungrateful beggars went for the Aug instead.

I don't an awful lot about the SA80 in any of its forms but the bullpup design which means it can't be fired left handed when in cover/built up areas seems a serious flaw.

David.

AUG, great choice.

The only trouble with a calibre of 6.5cm is the recoil, 2.56" is some rifle. Rather you than me.
If you think that the recoil of a 6.5cm that'll make you wince, try doing this with a 6.5"...

Let's face it, this is the best battle rifle ever:

I’ve actually handled one at the military small arms museum, location I forget, many years ago.

It really was well ahead of its time as was the MP44 as an assault rifle. Designed for paratroopers and such it could be used as a club if ammunition ran out.

There is a lot of negative comment on the thread about the SA-80 in its various generations and what I will say is most of the negative comments will be by people who haven’t used them but have read a lot about them being used.

They aren’t perfect but if maintained correctly are a good enough weapon system. All bullpup designs have similar issues and having used the FAMAS I’d take an SA-80 any day.

Gosh! You don’t think it was a certain ”member” who recently had a bad experience with a blown primer/ejector do you???
Just curious.

I am sure he was just standing on a chair to dust his pictures when he slipped off it and fell on one of his collection of artillery shells. And, as you do...you do too don't you...that as it was so hot inside his house that he'd taken off all his clothes.

A thousand years ago in another life: I was explaining that sometimes a patient presents with what was referred to a "? foreign body".

I showed this very young, very bright, very inexperienced medical student this x-ray. Her reply has amused me for decades:-

"How on earth did he swallow that?"

I have this friend who would just like to know if it actually happened when you were putting up the new shelf for all those prizes….
Just asking…
