Eley subs arrrrrrrgh!!

I know there’s been a few threads on these but I’ve come to the conclusion they are no longer a viable hunting round.
My CZ 452 shoots the green boxes lovely and I have a few put by. Also I had a brick of the newer 38gn white label and they were very good out to 100yds on the rabbits so I’ve been buying a box now and then to test and hopefully find a batch to stock up on.
After last night I give up, this must be the eighth different batch from various shops of the white label and my rifle just won’t shoot them, 2 inch plus groups at my 60yd zero last night whereas switching over to my “good“ batches gives the usual single ragged hole.
I know ammo is trail and error across all of the calibers but these new 38gn are crap, I’ve had boxes full of crackers, I’ve some dropping 2” short of zero, the heads in this latest batch are LOOSE ffs.

I had the opposite, found the green box shot very well, bought another 200 and found I was getting inexplicable misses on rabbits including no thud into the backstop from the miss.

As it turned out they must have been under charged as they were literally falling out of the end of the barrel about 10’ in front of me!

Bought some white box and they’re back in form, 1/2” groups at 50 yards and very consistent! Stocked up on that batch…..

I bought a few boxes for use in the loaned brother in laws Cz 22lr.
All I can say is inconsistent compared with the cci subs. Won’t buy again.

I find the white box ones are passing through the rabbits and not expanding. Moved over to the cci segmented more expensive but happier using them.

The rimfire forums are full of tales of woe. Lots of recent stories of bad ammo batches, previously reliable brands / lines turned to shite. I wrote up on here how I succeeded in getting CCI to refund me for a hopeless batch of Standard Velocity a couple of months ago.

According to my rimfire expert mate, the Eley white box 38gr is the exact same ammo as the Fiocchi 38gr subsonic red box. Just a different box and name, but made in the same factory. Just in case you were thinking of trying the Fiocchi.

We should do more to hold the manufacturers to account. I enjoyed fighting with CCI / Vista. It took a while, but proving the point got a message across - we the customers expect better. The constant supersonic crackers and fliers were totally unacceptable. So it’s worth thinking about writing to Eley. A video of targets as they are shot, with two cameras, one at the shooter recording the crack, one at the target, that worked for me. Careful measurement and recording of group sizes.

And then the threat of posting it all on Rimfire Central. That got their attention.

I have had excellent accuracy and consistency with 42g max Winchester subs. Will do single bullet hole groups at 50 m if I don't mess up.

moved to remington from Uley some time ago but god are they a dirty round. no real problem in the ba but in the semi it gums up the action after what seems only a few shots.... used on vermin and range work

I’ve still got a few hundred of the old 40gr Eley subs and even a good lump of these!
