Eley subs arrrrrrrgh!!

yeah a guy i heard at the nec s/show said rws subs dont have the same results,136.webp now get this he said at 150 yds :cuckoo: pics of rabbits shot from 15 yds to 75 yds good enough for me bs

Such a shame if we are seeing the demise of the once great Eley Kynoch, probably the most respected rimfire round out there. Ordered a few cases of Eley Grand Prix, 12 gauge, paper 6 shot. Looks different to the last lot, somehow feels cheaper, more like the Hull version?

The eleys in the green box were always spot on when I used them. I’ve had good and bad with the white box 38 grain eleys. The last ones I bought were good but I’ve lost faith in them at the moment. SK’s have been really good, but I think they’ve stopped making the subsonic hollow points. High velocity hp’s are still available and are very accurate in my rifles, it’s just the noise factor. RWS always seem consistent.

eley hawk make the cartridges and are nothing to do with eley who make the .22 rimfire.

I've always found the old Eley subs to be about the most accurate in my Finnfire and Annie, haven't had the misfortune to try the new ones yet... They do however jam every single time in my AMT 10/22 semi.

Echoing others thoughts, I also find the RWS subs very good, but they are definitely significantly lower velocity at around 980fps according to my chrono. Bizarrely, despite the low velocity they cycle beautifully in the AMT?

I have also found CCI subs to be pretty good but definitely louder than most & every half a dozen or so rounds you get a very loud 'cracker'.

Anyone else notised he speling is atrosious on this threed 🤭

Bought 500 rounds Eley subs when I purchased my cz455 couple of years back which are soon to need replacing, them were really accurate, so this thread is timed perfectly for me. Would never have thought this could happen to a stalwart like Eley? 🧐

Wots rong wiv tha spalling thenn £

I always used green box Eley and found them very accurate but the new white box shot terrible.
When I contacted Eley about it they said the only thing they changed was the packaging .

This is the reply i got from eley

I am sorry to hear about your issue regarding our 38 grain subsonic hollow.
However when we changed from 40 to 38 grain the only thing that changed was the packaging specifying this, nothing physically changed to the ammo.
This is due to bringing in improved measuring methods which provided a more specific weight measurement, which therefore came out at 38 grain

Well that cancels their statement....when we changed bullet weight the only thing we changed was packaging?????? 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I have a few boxes of eley green box left which ive always used and shooting brilliantly out of my annie , however the new 38g ones are absolutely shocking , loose bullets and very inconsistant , norma are great at 60yds but open up after that , sk standard , match and rws are are very good and will be my choice when the old eleys run out

are they suggesting that prior to their improved measuring they could not work to a greater accuracy than 2 grains, if so that is very concerning as I would think 2 grains is a significant amount with regards to the small quantity of powder in a .22lr round.

@Pellet Pinger

The rimfire forums are full of tales of woe. Lots of recent stories of bad ammo batches, previously reliable brands / lines turned to shite. I wrote up on here how I succeeded in getting CCI to refund me for a hopeless batch of Standard Velocity a couple of months ago.

According to my rimfire expert mate, the Eley white box 38gr is the exact same ammo as the Fiocchi 38gr subsonic red box. Just a different box and name, but made in the same factory. Just in case you were thinking of trying the Fiocchi.

We should do more to hold the manufacturers to account. I enjoyed fighting with CCI / Vista. It took a while, but proving the point got a message across - we the customers expect better. The constant supersonic crackers and fliers were totally unacceptable. So it’s worth thinking about writing to Eley. A video of targets as they are shot, with two cameras, one at the shooter recording the crack, one at the target, that worked for me. Careful measurement and recording of group sizes.

And then the threat of posting it all on Rimfire Central. That got their attention.
I fear with ammo shortages being what they are in the states they will be confident they still have a strong market even with known accuracy issues, they can’t make the stuff quick enough!
