Yes you’re quite right when put like that. But they consistently stay below the velocity that produces a sonic crack which is something you can't say about some of the other brands.
eley hawk make the cartridges and are nothing to do with eley who make the .22 rimfire.Such a shame if we are seeing the demise of the once great Eley Kynoch, probably the most respected rimfire round out there. Ordered a few cases of Eley Grand Prix, 12 gauge, paper 6 shot. Looks different to the last lot, somehow feels cheaper, more like the Hull version?
Thanks for that!eley hawk make the cartridges and are nothing to do with eley who make the .22 rimfire.
Wots rong wiv tha spalling thenn £Anyone else notised he speling is atrosious on this threed
Bought 500 rounds Eley subs when I purchased my cz455 couple of years back which are soon to need replacing, them were really accurate, so this thread is timed perfectly for me. Would never have thought this could happen to a stalwart like Eley?![]()
That explains why they’ve gone from 40 grains to 38 grains then?I always used green box Eley and found them very accurate but the new white box shot terrible.
When I contacted Eley about it they said the only thing they changed was the packaging .
This is the reply i got from eley
I am sorry to hear about your issue regarding our 38 grain subsonic hollow.
However when we changed from 40 to 38 grain the only thing that changed was the packaging specifying this, nothing physically changed to the ammo.
This is due to bringing in improved measuring methods which provided a more specific weight measurement, which therefore came out at 38 grain
are they suggesting that prior to their improved measuring they could not work to a greater accuracy than 2 grains, if so that is very concerning as I would think 2 grains is a significant amount with regards to the small quantity of powder in a .22lr round. This is the reply i got from eley

That’s it, you’ve cracked it. Problem solvedI think I will keep all my old empty green boxes and transfer the ammo from the white boxes into them and everything will be fine.![]()
I fear with ammo shortages being what they are in the states they will be confident they still have a strong market even with known accuracy issues, they can’t make the stuff quick enough!@Pellet Pinger
The rimfire forums are full of tales of woe. Lots of recent stories of bad ammo batches, previously reliable brands / lines turned to shite. I wrote up on here how I succeeded in getting CCI to refund me for a hopeless batch of Standard Velocity a couple of months ago.
According to my rimfire expert mate, the Eley white box 38gr is the exact same ammo as the Fiocchi 38gr subsonic red box. Just a different box and name, but made in the same factory. Just in case you were thinking of trying the Fiocchi.
We should do more to hold the manufacturers to account. I enjoyed fighting with CCI / Vista. It took a while, but proving the point got a message across - we the customers expect better. The constant supersonic crackers and fliers were totally unacceptable. So it’s worth thinking about writing to Eley. A video of targets as they are shot, with two cameras, one at the shooter recording the crack, one at the target, that worked for me. Careful measurement and recording of group sizes.
And then the threat of posting it all on Rimfire Central. That got their attention.
