Blaser aftermarket barrels

I thought I’d restart this thread as I’m keen to source someone to make me a Blaser R8 barrel in 404 Jeff

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

Joh
I've been talking to James at Jager a bit recently. He's keen on the .404 and has been developing a barrel stub. It would be well worth you having a chat with him if you're not sorted already?

I enquired also they weren't any cheaper than an original my gunshop can supply, infact our shop was cheaper for genuine article.
That might be true for a standard 17mm barrel but you are way off for either a semi weight or a match barrel.

Mike charges £1095 for a new barrel in a calibre and profile of your choice built on your original stub, that is threaded with thread protector and cerakoted.

A Blaser match barrel is £2300 ish new and that will still be hammer rifled not cut rifled like Mike's barrels, also you will not need a variation if you keep the same calibre where as you will when buying any barrel from Blaser as the serial number is on the stub.

Oh and personally I wouldn't touch Jaeger Sporting with somebody else's barge pole, do a search on here

Funny how lots of people say that. But when you do the search you find it's just a couple of very loud people spreading the same stuff. Then when you go into it a bit further you start questioning things, they don't add up. I spent days researching before I finally decided to get a rifle from him. It's spot on, absolutely perfect. Couldn't have dealt with a nicer guy and the workmanship is first class, which you'll find backed up by plenty of other members on here too. No company has 100% happy customers - I'm good at what I do and I still found a couple who would say I'm terrible. Forget rogue traders - rogue customers are a thing.

I am speaking from 100% personal experience but he also severely messed around a good friend.

I have no problem with you speaking as you find and accept that that your experience maybe very different to mine but you should give the same benefit to others.

My experience is that the bloke is a liar and his work is of a very poor standard and from what I have read on here I am not the only one who shares that opinion, like I said in my first post, do a search and make up your own mind.

He has done a very good job on my .222 but communication was a problem at the time.
However I have seen some of his other work, rifles he has built from scratch for full time stalkers and keepers they are completely satisfied with his work.

That's fair enough. If it's personal experience then I can't argue with that. What I don't like in James' case is that a lot of the time people will say "I heard that... enter some bad story that's been regurgitated a million times by the same person". It's obvious why he isn't liked by some but I'm the opposite. I like his attitude and the way he works.

A lot of these cases also go back many, many years. I don't know the complete history and it's not my business to want to. All I can comment on is his current performance, which in my opinion is very good. There are too many people out there who love to kick a man when he's down. Some will keep kicking so the person can never truly get back up again and that's not how a decent human being acts.

I posed the question on the blaser Facebook group (yes now learned how to make use of facebook)

It was suggested that Blaser (albeit in 2015) had said that 404 J will not fit the R8 series

Much research indicates that that is not necessarily true

300 RUM insert apparently works along with the UM bolt head

I posed the question to a couple of extremely knowledgeable fellas on the African forum - one of whom has a 404 jeff barrel for his R8

I thought I'd share their input .....

In my response to John, I speculated that the .300 RUM insert would be the one, so it does not surprise me that that is the one in use with your rifle

The shoulder of the .404 is obviously in a different place, but I had observed that the feeding rails on my MkVs .340 Wby and .257 Wby were the same, and the .257 Wby feeds well even though the case is shorter, so I speculated that the shorter main body .404 should feed from the longer main body .300 Rum insert.

To be confirmed with tests.

As to bolt head recess diameter, the spec for the .300 RUM is 13.56 mm, the spec for the .375 Blaser is 13.59 mm and the spec for the .404 is 13.79 mm.

I can see where RUM and Blaser cases share the same bolt head (0.03 mm difference), and it may still work with a .404 (0.2 mm difference) without modification.

To be confirmed with caliper

Very promising then. It would be great to see you get the calibre you want on the rifle you want it fitted to. All is not lost - a positive outcome.

fwiw I have a 8.5x55Blaser barrel for my R8, it’s based on the 404J but shorter so the shoulder isn’t in the same place. needs the magnum bolt, and the mag insert is common for 270wsm, 300wsm, 6.5prc and 8.5x55Blaser

Aren’t the Blaser magnum cartridges based on the 404 j case? If so the magnum bolt will be just right.
