Boots... Hanwag

Afternoon team! Im considering some Hanwag Trapper Top GTX boots. I currently have Bestard Explorers, but im not getting on well with them as they seem to be quite wide and they annoy me. I did have Meindl Dovre Extremes and I liked them but I fancy something different this time and i have read some bad things about never quality. Does anyone know how Hanwag compare in sizing to Meindl?

Meindls are shorter than Hanwags. If I have a Meindl that fits lengthwise it will be too wide. Regular Hanwags fit me perfectly. But Hanwag also has wide variants of some models.

Hi @Steff , im not sure I follow... Do you think I would need to go up a 1/2 size?

I currently have a pair of both, hanwag and meindl.
Boot fit is a personal thing but for me the meindl are more comfortable, I find the hanwag a narrower fit and they nip after a while.
The hanwag seem warmer but aren't as high so today for example I went over the tops crossing a stream, maybe the meindl would have been fine!?
Build quality, the meindl probably are very slightly stronger/hard wearing.
Think they're similar price.

I‘ve heard the exact opposite. But I can‘t tell, as I only have Hanwags. Scotland, Poland, the Alps, they‘ve seen it all. My first pair lasted 15 years. And I‘m now on my second and third pair now. On the first pair the soles started to disintegrate. But this is common with all makes nowadays. There‘s even a name for it, which I forgot.

PS: Hydrolysis is what it‘s called.

I don't know if there is a lot in it really, I was told hanwag and meindl use a lot of the same processes in manufacturing; and they're German built! 👍

Vote for Hanwags. Tried most other brands but wouldn’t change.
Have the long and short boots.
I find that I need the wide fit even though I don’t need to in most other brands.
Last pair I bought in 2020 were made in Croatia.

I was also going to get a pair of Hanwags until reading a few really positive reviews for the Grisport Gamekeeper boots which I decided to give a go.
The Grisport boots are currently £135 with free returns on Amazon, so far I’ve no complaints, warm, waterproof and hard wearing, unbelievable value.

2 pairs of hanwags, 6 and 7 seasons in. Still function perfectly. I take a size 9, euro 43 and they were the same as meindl, but possibly slightly narrower.

I bought the exact same pair you are considering almost 10 years ago and only last year changed them out . Size wise I seem to remember them being narrower than lowa boots I tried. If it helps they are narrower than the brandesscosse cervo rosso boot I replace them with but hanwag Trapper Top GTX boots are lower on the shin. I would say these boots have as stiff a sole as the aforementioned boots. mine were thermal line which, unless in winter, was too warm in the uk conditions. Only starter leaking at the achilles heel 2/3 years back, gtx liner at stitching wearing over time. I also have a lighter pair of hanwag non gtx, traditional leather double stiched last / sole boots for summer use- which are excellent too but slightly wider than the Trapper Top GTX boots. Hope this helps.

I’ve owned a pair of hanwags… I found them very heavy, espcially when hiking up mountains in the Rockies. I’ve since switched to Lowa boots and would recommend the Z8S GTX. Ive had one of my pair for 7 years, they’ve gone through water, are great on ice, I’ve walked through fire, gasoline was dumped all over them, gone up and down mountains and they’re still going strong.

Hangwags for me , ive a pair of high tops and pair of there walking boots ( i do a lot of walking) , great boots
i take a size 10 ,so bought 10s and they fit spot on .

hanwag boots all day long. Been a keeper I’ve tried pretty much every boot on the market and the Hanwag trapper tops are easily the best. I find them so comfortable and light. I wear them all day every day. Current pair are coming up 3 years old and are still going strong.
