PSA prostate test

Wow- a few different opinions and treatment methods then.....🤔 as far as exercise goes - I have just semi retired from a very physical job so possibly 😮👍

I have do indeed have a full head of hair 😮👍

As for further tests/examination I am seeing GP again next week so will relay what I am being told to her.

Whilst any rapid change should be looked at, its not unusual to suddenly realise we arent the virulent young bucks we once were.
At 51 you have on average , half the testosterone you had at 20, genetically , some men have more (the bald ones usually, believe it or not !) and some have less.
Its widely accepted that if youre still sporting a full head of hair in your 50s (like myself) its probable you have had, and will have lower test than the average.
TRT is one answer , but GPs are very reluctant these days to give hormone replacement to men , or women for that matter , in the UK, due to cost more than anything else.

An enlarged prostate comes along at this age too, trouble peeing ect, there are drugs available to calm it down some, but again, it seems GPs are reluctant to give them out err, willy nilly.
There is a herbal supplement called saw palmetto, which has helped me greatly.

Sorry but thats just plain wrong, you cant 'create' test by training , rather the opposite, your body uses it up with exercise.
If you have low test to start with, your balls arent going to suddenly kick back into action because you start doing some lifts, and creatine is just a repair protein.
There are supposed supplements that are vitamin based that profess to increase test, I dont think any of them are worth wasting money on.
Plus to say 51 is too young for viagra ect, makes you wonder exactly what age its benefits are aimed at , 70 + ??
Does saw palmetto help with libido or is it more a bladder directed treatment? Just looking it up....🤔

I'm 57 and have never had any correspondence from the NHS for bowel cancer screening, so took the decision a few weeks back to go for a private BUPA health assessment & they did the physical prostate examination, blood checks and stool samples - all results were fine and in my opinion money very well spent. Was allowed more time with the Doctor than I've had in the last 20yrs in total with an NHS GP!

....also no problems with libido ;)

It may be stating the obvious, but lifestyle has a big impact on libido. Poor diet, excess weight, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, sleep derivation and a lack of exercise and general fitness can have a heavy impact on your performance when you're young, never mind over 50. Also, impotence is an advance warning sign of diabetes or pre-diabetes. It's worth getting that checked as well.
Lifestyle is also a factor in both Prostate problems and diabetes, so living the best way you can will only help in all respects.
And talking of diet, a diet high in lycopenes is linked to good prostate health. Which basically means all the red vegetables and fruits. Tomatoes, red peppers, red cabbage, mangos, papayas, wtaremelon, red grapefruit etc. The single most concentrated source of lycopene is tomato puree. Adding it regularly to you food is beneficial.

well that’s an interesting point of view…maybe all these studies are just plain wrong !
Here’s what the research says about the impact of exercise on T levels:

  • A 1983 study of T levels in men and women after lifting weights found that men experience significant increases of testosterone while women experience almost no increase.
  • A 2001 studyTrusted Source of women found that resistance training can temporarily increase testosterone and have an impact on fat distribution.
  • A 2004 studyTrusted Source of older men found that regular physical activity increased testosterone and growth hormone (GH) levels as well as have a positive effect on brain function.
  • A yearlong exercise studyTrusted Source published in 2008 of 102 men who previously didn’t exercise much found that levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) increased by 14.5 percent.
  • A 2012 studyTrusted Source of men found that exercising regularly was linked to higher T levels than men who were sedentary (didn’t work out at all).
  • A 2016 studyTrusted Source of men with obesity found that regular exercise did more to increase T levels than even losing weight.

Ahah! Had the same problem a while ago so went to the sawbones who questioned me intensively about my sex life but lost interest quickly when in response to the question “when did you last have sex?” I responded “twice last night and then again this morning”…..
Funny old world but do get it checked!

After reading an article in (probably) The Daily Telegraph sometime around 2005 about the beneficial effects of Lycopene improving the body's natural sun protection..eg up to 50% for fair or gingers (btw I'm neither), I started having a squirt of puree every day... either on my scrambled or direct from the tube.

Have to say, I've not bothered with sun cream since then... although I prefer to stay in the shade during hot weather (eg today) I haven't burnt in all that time... quite happy to work out in it in shorts, short sleeves and a hat.

I just stay at a light-tan and I don't look like a dried up prune ......either way, tomatoes are good for you

Cheers

I'm having a PSA test at the beginning of August. Having had bowel cancer and surgery 18 months ago I strongly recommend that everyone gets tested for anything Cancer related. My Consultant Surgeon decided to "shave" my prostate during my surgery as it was close to the tumour that he removed--safe margins they call it.
All seems to be going ok at the moment, just remind me about Libido, wasn't that a board game  :tiphat:

I would recommend all over 55 to get a PSA test.

I did as a matter of course when I packed up my weekly commute in and out of the smoke at 60.

Doc tried to put me off, remember GP’s are private businesses contacting to NHS, trying to save a bit of money. No symptoms, scored 30 on PSA and 4/5 on the Gleason scale following scans , needles up the rear etc. 3 months on hormones to stop producing testosterone then big op to have prostate and lymph nodes stripped out.

When on hormones lost sex drive, ability to read a map, reverse park but became very good at colour matching and preferred Prosecco to a Pint 😂

Had I not had the test I would probably be stage 4 by now.
That’s when it’s bloody serious.
But I am alive, fit and stalking.
Johnson activity pretty much non existent, there is more to life .

PSA now 0

Keep well folks , get checked.

PSA at 60 was 1.2
Lockdown prevented the 5 year repeat
Age 68 I was losing bladder volume
Saw GP who took blood
5 days later he told me the PSA was 93
Into the NHS I went for consults and investigations plus hormone injections
Just before xmas I was told small cancerous tumor in my prostate, enlarged lymph nodes in the groin/pelvis and a shoulder node that was
a secondary cancer.
Gleason score of 8
Started chemo on Dec 30th (6 treatments every 3 weeks)
After 2nd treatment PSA was 4.8
At the end of treatments PSA 1.8
Now having 6 radiotherapy treatments.
By Christmas bone scans etc will be completed and I will be given the ok to get back to a normal life;)

I am in good humour, very positive and planning for the years ahead- should have at least 5 years, fingers crossed 10.
So, holidays with the grown up children, doing lots of things with my companion (she is also positive about the future) and doing some part time work.

Meanwhile I'm out rabbit shooting most weeks, not yet back sea swimming/scuba but,if he has any spaces after Christmas, I hope for a high seat session or two with Malcolm.

About 8 years ago at 60 ish, I have a very bad urine infection. In trying to find the cause I had a PSE test came in at 2.1 iirc, a peak flow test, also fine the gloved finger, the end result was I have an enlarged prostate that within the normal for my age, peeing has slow deteriorated of those years I have a PSE test every year, the only negative was a phone call from the GP 3 years ago saying I had very low potassium levels and to want more oranges and bananas. Last test was in March results ok at 2.2.

trickie

Not libido Im afraid, but better waterworks = better sexual health all round.
The link between saw palmetto and prostate health is only theory, all I can say is it worked for me , I take 1 capsule daily, along with bergamot extract for cholesterol .
  • A 1983 study of T levels in men and women after lifting weights found that men experience significant increases of testosterone while women experience almost no increase.
  • A 2001 studyTrusted Source of women found that resistance training can temporarily increase testosterone and have an impact on fat distribution.
These 2 studies conflict with each other, in any case , test is not a predominant hormone in (most) women anyway.
A 2004 studyTrusted Source of older men found that regular physical activity increased testosterone and growth hormone (GH) levels as well as have a positive effect on brain function.
The so called elevated test levels in all these studies are misleading.
Any physical exercise that causes muscle stress leads to the body repairing these stressed areas, test and other chemicals are released to deal with the 'damage'
The elevated levels are only measurable for a very short time, as the bodies reserves are used up.
As I stated , exercise does not lead to long term test production, and in some cases of older men , can be counter productive , if that is the goal.
This explains it better than I can.

So that article you posted supports what I said : Exercise positively affects testosterone levels
