UK Government Launches UK Deer Management Strategy Consultation

Local deer management groups headed up by a government body would if nothing else get land owners talking (among others) and identify the whole picture including those dragging their feet if cull numbers were agreed by all.
I've been involved in a management group.

I think it's fair to say that cull numbers produced need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

What you’re suggesting is the dear initiative via the back door under a different name to come along with a little group of chosen arse lickers to come and Hoover up all your ground behind your back!

The only figures that you can rely on in the dear management world is a number of empty cases you got from your rifle after going stalking!

In the deerstalking world there in less than six people that I know who kill deer that I would 110% would trust with accurate numbers!

Too many daydreamers who try and dig themselves up but when it comes to the crunch and the goings hard are either tired, hungry, cold and wet or just purely can’t be arsed

Can only say albeit a while ago and in Scotland the ones I attended were very useful where your given cull figures could be discussed and your returns and others were seen by all, did show certain trends with help always available ( carrot and stick, but avoided conflict). For sure if those group meetings were not held and representatives not attending there would have been a lot less deer shot, but this covered a huge chunk of land owned by various estates.
No idea how in practice this would work in England or what view part if any the nfu could play given there are no deer police

Sorry to hear things are that bad in your area.

I’ve seen it many a time, good stalkers of lost their ground because of branded bull**** Spouted to land owners!
And Probably money involved, have only been involved working directly for landowners, all pulling in one direction but in a professional and responsible sense, outside of that is clearly very different world for more reasons than you can shake a stick at.

Whilst I hear you regarding numbers I think that you're underestimating people a little? I suspect that I could name one or two who are on your list but there are plenty more.
Nearly every deer I shoot gets registered on one spread sheet or another and is visible to anyone who might need to see it. Across the country there are hundreds of similar groups who all keep accurate figures including sex, rough ages and weight. Sure, individual stalkers shooting for their freezer may have sketchy records because they don't have to answer to anyone but people who manage deer in numbers will likely keep good records. It's much easier now than it ever used to be to do so.

That smacks of the old thankfully defunct Deer Initiative (but no doubt working in the background on this as we speak)
No, has not been my experience.
That might be, but one rotten apple.....we had a different experience of the DI down here in Devon

No, that was, not might be, and to be honest the odd rotten apples were not rotten as such, just to old with failing bodies nearing retirement and to add without help. Good luck in deepest darkest Devon a great part of the world.

Failing bodies and nearing retirement they will still pull the trigger bringing down the numbers.
Most of them have the perms and good luck to them we do not need to back stab .
Remember they could pass on a perm in time to some one younger.

Yes absolutely, I was referring to individuals engaged in fun time employment nearing retirement, can be a hard road for old dogs. Have no relevant opinions on those with a “perm” and personally believe your only as old as the woman you feel🤣 last twenty words or so added after Baguio gave it a like.

What is a certainty is that IF people lose stalking or have professionals encroach or 'their' land to shoot deer, the original stalkers will not be happy. They will spread rumours and criticise those culling the deer because no one likes to be told that they were doing a poor job, even if they know that it's true. Finding the truth will be like finding hen's teeth. "Believe half of what you see and nothing that you hear" The DI got a bad name by some but was it actually justified? I don't know but certainly do not automatically assume that those telling me how terrible they were, were telling me the whole truth. Talk is cheap and you don't need to be up early in cold weather to talk!

We all need to help each other and if you are finding it hard to manage ask someone you trust to help and then pass it over when you feel the need.

Others have helped me and I would never go behind there backs.
Went to a stalk to learn the owner asked me how much people were paying and told him it was free.

I think there was a question asked in Parliament about the cost, per duck killed, of the past cull of the Ruddy Duck? Or the TB badger cull? If that figure is similar to the figure for deer God help us!
