Hi,
I've got a 7+1 Benelli 12 bore. Trouble is, sometimes I want to go duck/ geese shooting with it. Is there a way I can easily/ cheaply (ish) buy a smaller magazine to keep it legal?

Hi yes you can replace 3 shot loader which then is legal on marshs ! i think i have spare one

You’ll need end cap, follower and short spring. Not expensive, probably £50.
Gun then looks standard.

Again, because you are unlikely to be caught does it mean what your are doing is not illegal?

Some people fit a wooden dowel to restrict the magazine, as it can be removed there and then it’s pretty grey legally.

You can buy a sect 2 magazine, no idea how easy a swap it is.

Surely, following this reasoning, you’d have to re-register it with the authorities as a shotgun thus preventing reinstallation of the extended mag?

Why? You have a gun that is licenced to hold over 3 cartridges because it becomes temporarily restricted it doesn’t need to be re-registered, it’s still a section 1.

However at the point you are using it it is not capable of holding more than 2 cartridges in the magazine so you are not breaking any laws there.

My understanding is that your licence would remain a firearm, irrespective of the capacity at any moment. Therein lies the potential problem, albeit one unlikely to crystallise.
You will note from my original post that my personal view is out of sight - out of mind.

Pretty sure the regs stipulate a gun capable of holding more than 2 in its magazine, or words to that effect, is not legal for Wildfowling . the Point of Legality to be argued out in court Is if your gun, as it is registered as capable of holding more than 2 in the magazine , if with a non permanent attachment to limit the magazine would be sufficient to be deemed limited to 2 shots in the magazine for the purposes of Wildfowling. I suspect “capable” is the operative term to be considered Here. Just my thought,……

Does said gun not have to have section 1 condition stating what use for ? Vermin etc pigeon etc … won’t say geese or duck on there …
So of generally out on marsh etc legal I’d say no at a guess …..
But
Shooting geese under licence for crop protection etc I Dunnoe
