The design a pretty standard one really, one of my Secare models, 5mm stock SF100 steel, 100mm blade, the Secare has been around for yonks now and still proves a very popular knife, very capable and it sits lovely in that hand.
I have had the Crazy Fibre Micarta scales kicking around the workshop for a while now and thought it time to do something with them, I'm not sure of the name of this orange/black colourway but I believe it could be Red Storm?
The thing of note about these scales is the way they were made, they way that they were shaped, CNC machined, milled from a solid black by a computer controlled milling machine. This process is in common use worldwide now in the world of knife making and assuming you have the appropriate project ( which this Secare is not) it can save a lot of time, the problems being you do need a few of the same types to go at, quantity is your friend as the process and equipment can be outrageously expensive, and it is not easy to get started, the programming side of things again very complex and not easy to find someone who is capable and also has an understanding of knives, which does help.
I do however have a couple of projects in the 'shop that do render themselves suitable for the process so it is one I am exploring quite actively, and have been for a while, that is why these particular scales exist, unfortunately though, although my other projects are getting a bit of traction, for the foreseeable these particular scales will remain a one off.
It is tricky to see in these photos but the surface of the scales has a very cool textured finish, a finish not even feasible to do by hand, I shall try and get a better photo of that.
Another point of note is the Armour Black Cerakote finish to the blade, because the knife is fully 'strippable' by means of the stainless Torx screws, it gave me the chance to have that applied, I think I am going to leave it sterile, blacked out, no makers mark?
I am also currently debating with myself whether to get the screws coated too?!
