And we worry about lead.

And we worry about lead in drinking water & ammunition. This sometimes beggars belief. I warned many people that one of the consequences of Brexit was that once again the Uk would become the dirty man of Europe, the days of picking loo paper off your fishing line on the beaches are returning, rivers once again becoming open sewers. Whatever your views on Europe, they made us clean up our rivers & seas, improve our infrastructure, sometimes with European grants. The irony is that a number of water companies are French owned, & they would not get away with this in their own country. Anyway, that's irrelevant now, would you want your children swimming in those beautiful chalk streams now that the Government turns a blind eye, the shareholders are more valued than our childrens safety. Thanks to Feargal for continuing to highlight the problem. The water companies blame increased housing, they are actually being paid more to do this.To swim in our own effluent. Nice work.

I dont think this is a brexit issue, no matter how much you want it to be.

Its an enforcement issue, and like most of central and local government, the employees could not be bothered doing what they are paid to.

There hasnt been a reservoir built in 30 years. The rivers would be in much better shape if decent infrastructure had been built, during our membership of your beloved EU. There is also nothing to stop anyone who wishes going to live in any of the remaining EU countries. The RoI and Portugal are giving out passports with minimal requirements.

Eurpopean grants WE PAID FOR ,LESS A CUT FOR BRUSSELS ! When will folks get we were putting in more than we were getting out . I didnt see our rivers improve i saw them decline through the EU period that was mainly due to getting rid of the old river boards and wrapping it under the EA imo .

We are certainly putting it in at the moment.

Our rivers are now full of effluent, EU regulation doesnt apply now, its cheaper to pollute than fix infrastructure. I think that to judge me as a remainer is meaningless & inaccurate. Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the fines imposed by Brussels & are now fixed by our Government? Who seem hellbent on rewarding the shareholders. What has living in the EU got to do with effluent in OUR rivers? This seems to be a recent problem, & until the level of fines imposed by our Government approach the cost of investment, then the problem will continue. Sorry, but its a disgrace.

I live near a town in South Lincs which has doubled in size with new houses. I have yet to see any new capacity.constructed at the sewage treatment works. As our water authorities are mainly owned by foreigners in the EU why not just take them back in house.

The way I see it is a lack of investment in most, if not all of our infrastructure. Water (sewage) is no different, these companies have made millions off the back of Victorian engineering without investment and now the the systems are crumbling and no longer able to cope, we are the mugs having our bills increased to replace what they should have been up-grading for the last hundred years or so. Don't get me started on the BT monopoly on rural landlines or the lack of police officers on the beat, or the shambles of firearms licencing. Non of which can be blamed on the democratic decision to leave the EU.

The biggest crime in the water industry was Severn Trent taking over Birmingham's water system which was built and funded by the ratepayers of Brum.

Water/sewage is very different, particularly when is deliberately dumped into the sea & rivers & get paid for it. How come planning was allowed when the infrastructure is not in place to deal with extra housing. The profit is there, more than ever, massive pay rises to the heads of companies, share holder dividends, but no investment made. What has happened borders on criminally negligent, at the very least they should be made to put right the damage, restock the rivers etc. And it is most definitely the fault of our ex prime minister who appears to have given the green light to this.

The whole thing seriously boils my urine , something seriously wrong with the system and a crime against humanity if younger would take up politics.
Very serious stuff imo

It’s wrong agreed, a situation that needs sorting out asap.

What is your reasoning for placing the blame at the door of BJ in particular though. The dumping of sewage etc predates his time in No10 by a long way…..

This isn't anything new since we left the EU, it's been a slow decline for decades, indeed history tells us it's been a problem ever since mankind started to build large towns and cities. Charles Rangeley Wilson wrote a good book called Silt Road, well worth a read.

Mike. Wasn't he the one who said that in exceptional circumstances it may be necessary? Like freak weather events, that seem to be turning up with increasing regularity. Its a sort of get out of jail clause. Seems to have opened up a floodgate literally. Agreed that sewage has been dumped periodically, but the situation is getting a lot worse recently, every town near me has doubled in size, as Ratel said absolutely no improvement in infrastructure.

Want to know what we are going to do about it, as we managed to a great extent to clean things up and reverse the situation with a wide variety of species especially fish on the up.
Do not expect my opinion to matter but something deeply wrong and maybe Not reversible given all the other stuff in play, climate change etc.

There is no joined-up thinking involved with the planning process in this country between the planning department giving permission to develop land, and the other infrastructure needed to support those people that will buy those homes. Schools, doctor's surgeries, etc aren't taken into consideration. Although sewerage and surface water is supposed to be.

Never considered myself a greenpeace type or tree hugging bunny lover, but looks like were in some respects ahead of their time. Why poison your own rivers unless it cannot be avoided yet pledge on world scale to fight climate change, use electric cars, and ban lead shot, total con😡
