Robbing beggars , the rfd I deal with , did it on the spot , no charge , no mither ,

But I do use him as my go to RFD , for ammo etc , and have done for the last 30'years

I wouldn't as far as to say that mate.
RFDs can accumulate a lot of old, damaged or simply unwanted firearms, and while some may be useful for spares a lot are of no value whatsoever, and actually it may in one way or another cost them to dispose of them. So often it's not worth their time or effort. So, to a certain extent I can understand the RFD asking for a reasonable fee if only to cover their time completing the necessary paperwork. However, if you are a regular customer I would kind of expect them not to be too bothered.

I've surrendered a couple of guns at the local police station in the past and it's been done with the minimum of fuss or bother. They did come back to me on one occasion months after the surrender to ask if they could include the one in their amnesty figures, probably to make those figures look better, and I said why not as it was no skin off my nose.

P.S. £25 per gun is more than a bit cheeky.

To be fair I expected to pay for the one I handed to an RFD as it was utterly useless. Not that a I complained that I didn’t get charged.

Dorset police have an auction too. Not many shooting items (a few scopes) but interesting viewing. Looks to be mostly recovered property....

You'll no doubt have a reference or evidence to suggest that "they" sell surrendered firearms on?

I worked with two forces Firearms Departments and they would send absolutely anything from their seized and surrendered stores direct to a furnace for destruction. It was pointed out that a lot of non-licenced kit was being unnecessarily destroyed, such as scopes, slips, bipods etc which would have realised significant revenue if auctioned off like lost property is, but the response was emphatically "The force will not be seen to supply anything firearms related."

waste of public funds , some very expensive and historically important firearms need only be in the right hands . To chuck a fine English gun in a furance is crazy at the extreame its above the chief constables annual salary . Junk, and worthless guns fine !

If anybody tried to surrender anything of value we'd direct them to an RFD. Anything of historical interest was shown to Leeds Armoury. The vast majority of stuff was absolute tat anyway.

Depends on your idea of valuable. I had a guy bring in a Sauer 202 in 243 in almost mint condition. When I pointed out there was an RFD 5 mins away and he'd probably get a few hundred quid at least he said he couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

People should definitely be directed to RFDs first just because even a few old shotguns from a deceased relative may generate a few quid that could go towards a funeral, wake, money for grandkids etc that makes a difference to a lot of people.
