UKDTR mentoring scheme

Good morning All.

UKDTR are looking for new members as we are getting more and more calls for help and sometimes in areas where we have no cover.

Anyone considering would need to be an experienced stalker and willing to put time into training a young dog or have a trained dog already.

Thanks for looking

Tony

I have a couple of questions:
Is there a standard call out fee a team gets paid per call out?
How come older dogs are only accepted under certain circumstances and younger dogs/pups are preferred?

'This scheme is not for those who want to have a deer dog to take stalking only'

:-|
I.e not just a stalking companion, UKDTR will not be mentoring in a deer indicating etc. You will be expected to be on the call outlist and support those that require help.

Purely on a volunteer basis, to help those in need, though support to fuel costs are great fully received.

Please enquire through the link in advert, to discuss if you have an older dog.

Like with most dog training it best started at an early age. You will be expected pass the mandatory tests described, before going on the call list to support others.

Hope that helps.

In years gone by i have driven from norfolk to scotch corner to track.

For me i am now retired from tracking, UK law does not support it, although the ideology is an absolutely fantastic idea, and I don’t discredit at all Tony Lowry for pushing forward, but really lads, you’re better off, just looking after your own deer because 95% of the time when you go for a track, I will guarantee you only 5% of the actual callers will follow your advice they will have pushed that deer, or hunted and hunted and hunted for it, and usually push it on over a boundary!

You guys that wanna be trackers hats off to you I wish you all the very best of luck, but the reality in proper tracking, as in a proper wounded animal, I do not mean a dead muntjac or a dead roe 20m-150m In the rough I am talking about leg shot, Jaw shot, proper wounded animals, in the UK the failure rate is horrendous!

Sounds like a good scheme, I'll forward to some likely candidates. How much 1on1 mentoring are they likely to get Tony?
As the guiena pig, to this model/scheme a couple of years ago and the last few members have gone through the same.
I got full support from a mentor. We spoke every couple of weeks sometimes more. I used videos. GoPro/phone. Along side that we would meet up occasionally(when Covid restrictions allowed) for practice tracks. I would fully expected the same commitment. UKDTR would also be running train days for those on the scheme to support the mentoring. You mentor would be where possible located geographically in your area. (Noting that there is not full nation wide coverage as of yet). There would be a commitment on both parties, and a willingness to travel. Ultimately worth it.

Something we are aware of mate and fully understand the frustrations, hence a move away from just bog standard training days towards to the mentoring scheme. Selecting the right individuals/handlers/teams.

Along side running best practices days for stalkers. Currently proving relatively successful in follow up space, when trailed with various syndicates/outfitters.
of course we never going to fully win I suspect, but education is partly what is required. We can only but try.

Best of luck to you, the icing on the cake for me what is a 5 km track on a leg short red stag in the rut two years ago, 3 wound beds in the first 400 m told me that the animal was pushed on, despite being told by the Stalker/outfitter, whatever you wanna call them that they had not pushed it on!

unfortunately in the tracking game, there is too much bullshite , because the hunter does not wanna look bad when, in reality, the only rule of tracking that you need to follow is never ever believe a word that client tells you always rely upon your dog.

The uptake has been fantastic and I will contact all who have sent me a PM

Its mainly the amount of work that has to go into training the dog that puts many off, cold scent training is not difficult it just takes a lot of your precious time.
The handler needs to be relatively experienced stalker with an open FAC.

Ladies gents UKDTR are getting lots of interest which is great. Understandable a few are getting grumpy, with the lack of response. Please use the contact button on the website, to register interest. DO NOT USE PERSONAL MESSAGING TO INDIVIDUALS, on SD or other social media platforms, you run the risk of disappearing into the ether. This will allow UKDTR to track and manage from one central location. Please bear with as we all have Day jobs etc.

Cheers.

I have had contact from my own enquiry and spoken to one of those behind the organisation tasked with contacting folks and then one of the long estabished team whom i already know and have staked with a few times .
My own dog is 3 years old and not a puppy and i already have a dog who has tracked deer in heavy cover etc . Not many because i dont take shots that challege me but i can miss and i can wound ( a loose moderator caught me out on the range earlier in the week doing a bit of trajectory mapping , first occurrence thing for me) I once blew the rear leg off a fox because i hit a branch unseen in the scope! Its kind of tough to get a long track come up often enough TBF . i use the dog because i have to actually see blood . My dogs can run at high speed air scenting off the trod alone
but without wounded deer i cannot refine that, be a good way to refine my dog .
when the young dog qualifies i live in an area with a good population of deer , i can lay blood trails into areas populated by deer here and will do my level best to make training days . Travel many hundred miles ? cant afford to ! But i have good links and ground in Bowland, North Yorkshire and the lakes, so perhaps we can make the numbers to really make things happen fast all over the UK eh?
Nobody needs to be lectured after loosing a deer and nobody should expect the guy with a dog to defo find the beast but its worth trying with a tested dog.
Derogatory comments about the scheame, lack of contact back should honestly be kept to one's self the only money being spoken about is comming from candidates who wish to take the tests required for the dog and its not a lot . it isnt free to run the org , kitting out stands etc . Considering many will pay upwards of £200 for someone to take them on an armed walk
