Knife recommendations

So much choice!

hmm..my revised criteria:
a. Fixed Blade
b. Blade 4" to 6"
c. Must be able to hold a very sharp edge
d. Useful for both sticking deer (bleeding, and in Atlas joint if required)
e. Good for gralloching, skinning, and butchering/jointing
f. Price up to £75
g. Black plastic/rubber handle
h. Leather sheath with securing mechanism to avoid knive falling out

I really like the Bayley knife, but MAN its EXPENSIVE!

I treated myself at the Game Fair to a lovely damascus fixed blade made by James Noble. Lovely knife, nice bit of rams horn on the handle and a proper leather sheath. I have since sharpened it and I can safely say, it is the sharpest I have ever managed to get a knife. He does Stainless steel too, well worth a look. www.jamesnobleknives.com

I had a look at the James Noble stand at the CLA. I can't work out how he can do handmade British knives for those prices.

Mine measures 34.17mm in depth and 3.42mm thick on the spine. As i said I got mine from F.A. Anderson of East Grinstead 01342- 325604. They stock the Boker line still as far as I am aware.

the frost mora is an excellent choice.
it's cheap, tough as nails, holds a wicked edge & the plastic handle & sheath complies with all the hygiene rules for DSC 1&2

Just to add my threepenneth, the SOG Field Pup is a little cracker that ticks all your boxes. About £45 from Heinnie Haynes. I believe there is a new mark II version out now for similar money. Would highly recommend them.

Yes, and they offer superb service as well. I've used Heinnie Haynes many times and would thoroughly recommend them.

The only problem is every time I look at their website I end up buying something....in fact I've just ordered two Cold Steel Finn Bear's from them....doh!!

Your welcome. It's sat in the drawer under the computer and the digital vernier is sat next the computer so it was not a hard ship to get both together.. Didn't even have to get off my fat bum to do so . In fact I noticed it's due for an edge touch up, funny how one tests the edge when one picks up a knife better check the others too as I hate not having them all ready to go.

Theres a guy on airgun bbs selling these for £25 i just bought another one good little knife.

Another recommendation for the Fallkniven F1: very sharp and excellent edge retention, the blade is also thick and indestructible, also the zytel sheath is dishwasher-able, however it is a bit pricey and the blade is quite fat at the tip, so not to everyone's liking. I've also found I needed their DC4 sharpener with the ceramic side to get it shaving sharp.

The Mora of Sweden (formerly known as Frosts) knives are fantastic value for money, very sharp and sheaves hygienic, for the price you could buy several, however the edge retention is nothing like the Fallkniven!
