Limbsaver Sharpshooter X Ring

A question to those who may have used one of these rather odd looking things.

I seem to have plateaued at just the right side of 1” groups with factory ammo (any type).

I am curious if these little donut ring barrel whip dampers do what the maker says they can.

Tip from another life, you'll to make sure it doesn't move or any positive (hopefully) effect it has on harmonics will be rapidly negated.

The use of these products are not limited to rifle barrels, they are also slid onto archery stabilizers for a similar effect (although not as important as a barrel).

Make sure it's a very tight fit, slide on with washing up liquid used as 'lube' to get it on. Then try different positions until you get the desired effect. Pour water round the ring and rotate until what remains of the liquid has washed off to keep it in place.

Personally I think 1 inch groups are pretty good.

Was given a couple of these by a US client and put them on my .22 rimfire and .17HMR.

Spent the afternoon at the range and found them extremely frustrating - adjusted many times and gave no improvement what so ever - if anything made them worse.

Cut them off in the end, figuring that if they did actually work, rifle manufacturers would put them on as standard.

With regards to your plateaued grouping, inch is not bad, but I would suggest a more powerful/better scope with a more precise reticule. Made a difference when I moved from 3x12 to 4x16 or 6x24 on my rimmys.

Fair point: Tikka T3 lite .308 with a S & B 8x56mm.

A fair bit of money burning rifle fettling could be undertaken in pursuit of better accuracy...

I'd just buy more ammo, as whilst there is lead in the air, there is hope! :thumb:

Or should I say lead styphanate fumes from supposedly 'lead free/non toxic/tree hugging' rounds? :-|:norty::stir:

Without teaching you to suck eggs.

I'm guessing you have tried the likes of Hornady
Sako

Next thing I would look at in tikka is that everything is nice and torqued up. Making sure moderator is also tight.

Once that's all checked I would take the rifle out of the stock and check the recoil lug and slot where this sits. You don't want any movement.

Make sure the barrel is nice and clean. This can have a big effect on accuracy if Build up is too much.

Once this has all been done and nothing gained I would look at the crown. Maybe get it to a gunsmith and have it recrowned. Doesn't cost a fortune.

For the sake of £15 I am minded to give it a go. The other option is to start home loading - I have a recipe that gets 3 round cloverleaf groups that I worked up with a friend one afternoon last year.

The only problem being, I think home loading can become a standalone hobby in its own right!

You mean 'handloading' 😉

Without much effort you'll be over £500 down the hole just getting set up with the equipment and components. Some will say otherwise, but that's what happens when you want to chase improvements!

Another option would be a Lee Loader so long as you are willing to neck size only. I could send you a 308 vise die if you would like to skip getting a press but be warned it is a slow process (and you need a vise!)

It's a hunting rifle not a sniper rifle why isn't 1" at 100 yds with factory ammo acceptable?
If you went on a paid stalk and did that on the target before heading out do you think they would turn you away.

The OP is about whether the Limbsaver gadget works.

I put one on a 22wmr that grouped ok ish but without much consistency.
I will say it made the rife more consistent, in that the groups were without odd fliers outside the main cluster but it didn't shrink the groups much ,if at all.
