Thinking of getting a terrier, talk me out of it

Rumour has it that airedales got added to the mix of the GWP when they tried to make them better guard dogs between the wars…hard to get a working strain Airedale in the UK.
I’m sure I had an An old ‘Observers’ book of dogs or similar, probably from the 50s, that said Airedales were used as Police dogs until GSDs took over everywhere. I’d like to have seen that. A proper tough working Airedale.

I had the same book as a kid and found it in the loft only the other day, it had tick marks on all the breeds I wanted!
Airedales are great and I think they would make great mink indicating dogs. It’s crazy that mink are not legal quarry along side rabbits and rats.

There was a guy called Henry Johnson I believe that a read in some old 80s Full Cry magazine - that hunted bear and lion with Airedales in the states - I would imagine the sooner they treed the more likely you would be to get home will all your dogs !!!

Don't listen to the negative comments, terriers are great dogs.

Put the time into training any terrier and you'll have a perfect companion, even Patterdales. Loved above, feared below.

Seriously thinking of getting a working Lakeland primarily for ratting. Already got two GWPs, what could got wrong?

Well said magnificent 7

Well said magnificent 7 lakelands for me socialising your dogs early is the trick and abit of responsibility goes along way too.

I use terriers, small portable and very hardy. I also use mine wildfowling and picking up. The biggest issue i have is that they're very headstrong and driven. If you can channel that energy you have an amazing animal...and on the flip side, if you can't channel that energy you have a handful.

Got a Lakey x JR - just 9 months old - intend to train as my stalking dog to replace elderly GWP- and train to do Bringsel work - shaping up nicely and very sensible but not got to the Bringsel stage yet. Anyone else tried this?

I tried bringsel training with my latest GWP…Struggled to get the initial hold…Time got the better of me so i gave up. I might revisit it - training a terrier for bringsel will make finding muntjac in 5 acre bramble patches a tad easier!

this is a great resource for training:

yes and this situation is very familiar. The popularity of planting schemes where machine dug holes and planting on the soil heap leaves an ideal site for mass brambles and mini craters where deer can fall into - good luck with a bringsel hound.

As my Beagle passed away in March I am looking to get a Border Terrier in the next few months.

Any recommendations of good people to contact for one?

Thanks.

If it's a KC registered type of border rather than a working strain look on The KC website "find me a puppy" section, or there is a Border owners Facebook page. Our two are KC registered showy type, they kill rats ok, and between them, they nail a squirrel that ran across the lawn today. @Morkai

Thank you,

I will get my GF to join the FB group.
KC dogs arent really my thing.

Mine neither, my GF was the instigator on this one. Mind you I didn't want any more terriers full stop since my last Lakeland died, I've kept and worked them since I was 17, and I've got fed up with the fights and scraps, having to keep dogs away from each other. These borders are very docile in comparison, but they hunt small stuff well enough.

Maybe not 100% true but in my mind KC just means paying more for papers and nothing more.

Ive never had a terrier before, my nan had a particularly nasty JR that only liked a select few people, Ive had two Border Collies and then a Beagle, she sadly died in March and I think we have settled on the idea of a Border Terrier.

Ive never not had a dog in my life so have found these last few months very strange indeed.

Kc means they have been bred for looks and not ability, I like dogs that are doers, my last Lakeland bitch was the ugliest dog, with poor conformation, but by jolly did she work well.
I had 5 months without a dog once and then thought to myself what the heck am I doing to myself.
Good luck with your search, and be sure to post a few pictures when you pick one up.

Will do, cheers Bo

Now 1 year on from my original post and YES I have a terrier ,Tyke - a Lakey x JR - NO regrets - she is very sensible and has a great brain and senses. She is my new deer dog and has replaced my old GWP.
Right from the start I never get her excited, play ball or chase anything as a game - she gets no treats except as a reward for a positive response - concentrated on socialisation from 8 weeks onwards. Daily excercise includes lots of sit and watch for at least 5 mins. a time - Has now been stalking 5 times and shows great promise and has found a fallen deer in thick cover, saving me time for a search.
I had no need to be so skeptical but I new her father which helped as he was also very sensible.
