Poaching

Just a heads up to anyone with land north of Peterborough, we believe we have had poachers on the land over the Christmas period so keep a look out.

poaching is a problem every where and all year round,it will never be stopped !
it can easily be stopped via proper Police work and some worthwhile sentencing in court . too many puny sentences and too poor and too little Police interest in even doing any investigation ! Before anyone jumps down my throat that's the facts here!
Must be kind of freaky when the coppers actually get to grips with them but then we have Magistrates who view the perpetration of such events like some sort of socialist robin hood , when its really a callous crime connected more to Gambling than feeding their hungry family . If you do get a copper they dont want to get involved !
Be good to be fair to have a fish and game dept here in the uk !

I agree to a point, proper punishment would help. Take their FAC from them for a start , confiscate their rifles, that would help, but unfortunately the police are too interested in trying to prove that coarsing is the antichrist and concentrate on dog men too much rather than the main poachers of deer, Stalkers.

As far back as people have owned land, there's been poachers. Take a deer from the King's forests over a thousand years ago and it'll result in a stretched neck. Much less and you'll lose your hands. And that'll be people who had been poaching to live! Nowadays most poachers do it as a "sport" and perhaps to sell high value game, but never to survive.

Truthfully, it's no easy thing to stop or apprehend poachers. In the dark there's 360 degrees any poacher can go to escape and it's easy to see someone coming. The odd police car stop sometimes provides dividends, but they've still got it to prove. Which the cops might or might not think is worth it for deer, but for a brace of pheasants or duck, there's never going to be any big investigation.

It's easy to see why poachers vehicles end up with the likes of flat tyres. Although I'd never condone that!

I suppose the Police regard poaching of deer as a victimless crime because the deer belong to no one whereas hare coursing may result in criminal damage to crops, fencing, gates, etc.

The deer do belong to someone as soon as they're dead, ie, the owner of the land on which they lie, or the person who has the right to take deer from the land.
But yes, you make a fair point, and iirc the charges that can be brought against someone for poaching deer are different from other game. In the case of deer it is theft of the carcass that is the crime.
I may have got this wrong, I'm sure someone else will confirm.

Betting is what's behind the headless poults that are found in pens soon after they are delivered. The one who returns to camp with the most heads takes the pot.

The police will definitely class it as a victimless crime, I took a prosecution against someone for illegally slaughtering sheep in the back garden, the sheep had no ear tags by them time I had got there so could not be traced to a farm, police would not run with the theft as no person could be found to of lost anything and it was a victimless crime. The person admitted to stealing the sheep to the police from an unknown location whilst drunk.

I simply wont have Rifle shooters poach anything like as much as Dog men ! Sure there have been a good few shot on the neighbours' side but there must be 20+ taken by dog men

Surely causing unnecessary cruelty to animals at the very least.
