22LR or 17HMR

Whist there is overlap in the application of these two calibres, the 22LR subsonic is in a class of its own.
I can see the higher velocity 22LR phasing out in favour of 17.
But there is such a well established demand for the quiet 22LR and so may rifles out there, I feel comfortable that supliers will see the market opportunity for non leadsubsonic 22LR cartridge.

The bullet may need to be lighter (shorter) to reliably stabilise in current twist rates, so effective range might reduce.

So I'd suggest you get a S/H one, enjoy the lead, and watch this space..

What’s your thoughts on the lead ban if I may ask? It seems flawed to me!
I will pick myself up a CZ or Ruger then and see how we go. Lost me with “S/H” ?

Currently awaiting my FAC to arrive.

Decided I really want a 22LR after using both 17HMR and 22LR. Love subsonic and works well for the ground I’ll be shooting.
However I’m concerned about the dreaded lead ban and if I will still be able to use lead/subsonic rounds for hunting? I suppose no one can tell the future.
But my question is are we likely see any sort of exemption or am I being too sensible/optimistic 22LR seems to have no decent alternatives correct me if I’m wrong or would I perhaps be better off buying a 17? 22LR is already on my ticket when arrives so I’ll have to get a variation.
I applied for a .17hmr on my FAC. Decided in the interim that I quite wanted the option of both. When I had the FEO visit I had a chat and he added it on with a mod. I suspect if waiting 3 months you haven’t had your FEO visit yet. Have a chat and I’m sure they will add it on, especially if you have a reasonable argument for the two.

When I first applied for my first FAC for a .223 (is it really that long ago 🤔) I asked at my gun dealers for help with filling in the forms, which they did, suggesting I put in for a .22 also. I said I didn't want one but I did anyway. Best bit of advice I've had. I was granted both so all in one go I've two firearms on my tickets.👍

Thanks for the advice. I’ve had my visit already just waiting for the paperwork he said he’s happy with my experience I’ve already had and that I had the right idea on things and he’d recommend that I was put on a open certificate. So fingers crossed all comes through okay, I’ll probably see how I get on with a 22 and then perhaps try something else who knows. :)

if subsonic is what you want then .22lr with a modern digital scope with built in range finder and ballistic calculator will be a good choice. If noise is not an issue then .17 cal.

any lead ban delayed by another six, see basc connors post.

I heard that, but the way people are talking is that it’s imminent. I really hope it doesn’t go through. :/

I should’ve done that! Hey ho I’ve had my visit now, hopefully a variation shouldn’t be too much work if I need one. :)

Dont be put off by the noise difference between the two u less your shooting near noise sensitive areas.

I can easily pick rabbits off close to one another with my HMR with out them being spooked

I have a .22lr and it's not been out the cabinet for a while as the HMR is a better suited rifle for my needs.

I will not be without my .22lr though as i have a more noise sensitive permission which the HMR would not be suited.

Just get both and have fun shooting them

"Second hand"...

Lead: for sure it's not good for you, whether you breathe in the fumes, or eat contaminated meat.
So I can see why the professional meat trade need to avoid litigation, and that drives their purchase conditions and legislation.

As for personal kill it, cook it eat it; well I think fags, alcohol, and drugs are a much bigger problem in society, than a bit of lead shot rabbit or pigeon.

Edit.....
I'll add sugar to that list too

Couldn’t agree more with your points! Very sensible…

Another vote for getting both because they each have their plus points. The 17HMR is flatter shooting and I find I don't have to think too much about aiming whereas the 22 subs need a bit of range and holdover considerations. This evening I've been on the rabbits with the HMR at ranges around 70m with no holdover adjustments, if I'd been using the 22LR subs, I'd be aiming half an ear up for headshots, the HMR no holdover.

I have a 22WMR but mine is louder than the HMR. Rabbits end up several metres from where you hit them! I'll have to check out 22WMR subs when I can find them in stock.

I love rimfires because the ammo is low cost, dare I suggest you have a look at 17WSM? 500fps faster than the HMR. I zero mine at 50m, it's 30mm up at 100m and back on zero at 140m. And it's quiet-ish and will humanely do foxes up to 100m.

Are you only allowed to have one or the other?
