4x4 tyres???

Having recently replaced my trusty hilux with a NP300 navara I’m needing to kit her out with a new set of tyres as the more road focused ones at current just ain’t doing the job. My first thought was replacing them with the normal BF Goodrich but they aren’t the best in the wet, make a fair bit of road noise, have dramatically increased in price and weigh an absolute ton which of course eats away at the all to important MPG.
My old D40 had a set of Yokohama tyres on it that ticked most of the boxes but I can’t seem to remember what model of tyre or recognise the tread pattern from memory.
So the question is does anyone have any suggestions that may suit my needs?
I have just put 4 tyres on my 4x4 I always look at the fuel rating and rain/weather mine are both B ratings with 69 decibel noise but the type is for road use not off road, I compare online with free fitting and now use Tyresavings, they are fitted at local places like Formula1 ATS National tyres you purchase provisionally online book the place of fitting and pay when fitted I saved over £120 compared to the same tyre from others there were lots of B fuel rating but weather as low as D lots of C +C.

Grabber AT3s - quiet and good manners on the road in the wet.

As good as any AT in the mud.
And another vote for Grubber AT3. Having run my Disco 4 on the factory fit 255/50r20 Pirelli Zeros and never got stuck when off road ( But some near misses!) I took the plunge as I do more off roading now and had AT3’s in 255/55R20. There is no difference in noise at motorway speeds or in general tarmac performance but there is a significant improvement in off road performance I would strongly recommend them. Just need to be aware that with the slightly higher wall size the speedo reading at 70 is circa 3-4 mph understated

Has anyone tried michelin latitude cross tyres? Was talking to someone in my pheasant syndicate today and they spoke of them very highly, both him and his friend ran them.

Falken Wildpeak

My Hilux wore Falken Wildpeaks for about 20k miles:

  • Excellent on-road and pretty quiet. Adequate off-road when new but...
  • ...some sales images suggest significant side-wall relief profile which is really just shallow patterning and does not deliver any grip in truly muddy rutted conditions

I have now fitted the BFGoodridge AT K02s. Truly excellent off road, not so noisy on road as some declare. Only achilles heal? The hard rubber seems to be the least grippy on wet tarmac of the 5 brands I have used on 4x4s over the years. But I just drive accordingly.

Have a look at Coopers if you can find them in the right size.
I'm on the 3rd set now, driven long road journeys, snow mud etc without any issues.
They grip well compared to the Grabbers that were on the landy when I got it, with less road noise.

Has anyone tried Radar Renegade RT+ on their truck? Good reports elsewhere, thought I might try them next.
Yeah, not impressed. I had Kumho MT51s on before, so similar design - a mud terrain light option I guess. Very limited options around at the minute to replace them in 18". Not very civilised on the road and that is coming from lots of BFG MT mileage in the past. If you search on the forum there is a thread about them somewhere.

The biggest issue you'll find it's what's available in 18". I recently replaced tyres on my DMax and had very few reasonably priced options to chose from!

Thanks for that. I'm on 17" wheels, 285/70/r17 tyres, so plenty of options. Have you tried the Grabber X3's? They look to be a better option that the AT3's.

I did like the look of them but from memory, they were stupidly expensive in 18". About £220 a corner plus fitting. BFG and Cooper equivalent mud patterns were similar or a touch more. I think I paid about £130 for the Renegades.

Renegades much cheaper but not much good if you didn't like them. I think I'm resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to pay circ. £200 a corner.

Yep, I do think it's a case of you get what you pay for to a degree but I'm not convinced they will be ~twice as good. None of the mud terrains are ever going to be brilliant on the road and the Kumho MT51s I had previously weren't exactly perfect either (terrible road noise after 20k miles, to the point of wondering if a wheel bearing had gone, resolved by rotating them corner to corner and got another 20k ish miles out of them).

I recently needed a new Grabber At3 after getting a tyre condemned for a puncture (nail right through the shoulder of the tyre...); I couldn't find any in my size anywhere, seems UK stock is v low (mine was 255/55/19). Just a heads up.

Luckily when I had my AT3s fitted I did the spare as well, so that got fitted to have 4 matching treads, and I got a Yokohama to get slung on the spare.

I run that tyre size in Grabber AT3, never had a problem sourcing them, never in stock but fitters could always get them next day. Not had one fitted in about 12 months so is this stock problem recent? They are my go to AT tyre as well, quiet on the road and good in the wet and mud.

Yep I switched from Pirelli Zeros to Grabber AT3s (255/55/R19) and the first thing I did was take the AT3s on to the motorway to do a noise test at 70 mph. There was a very slight increase in tyre noise but not much and they are way way better off-road.

So here is my shooting / beating / picking up / stalking / foxing / wild fowling / pigeon shooting vehicle. It will and has gone every where I’ve needed it to go while wearing its Grabber AT3s. It’s also very nice on the road too.

I can't speak for these tyres specifically as not tried to source them but the price of shipping containers is so high now that importers are stacking them with smaller car tyres rather than bigger, bulkier 4x4 tyres. They can get more value of tyres in each container that way so few larger tyres being imported.
