End of the 17wsm in the UK?

I have been told that Edgar brothers will no longer be importing more .17 WSM rimfire ammunition? As far as I am aware, we only get Hornady WSM ammunition in this country and no other available options?

So does this mean that once people's personal supplies and dealers themselves have ran out of the Hornady ammunition, it's a dead cartridge in the UK?
 
It might be a lot more popular if some other rifle manufacturers had picked it up
It's only commonly available as the Savage B Max - arguably the worst rifle ever made
AFAIK, The other issue is that the chamber pressure is higher than most current rimfire designs can safely handle, so, unlike re-chambering a 22 rimfire for a 17HMR, a new design would be needed and none of the major rifle manufacturers seemed to think the potential market was big enough to make worth the bother

I also have a friend with a Savage B-mag, I got it for him at auction, new for a very good price about 3 years ago. He was also lucky enough to buy alot of what Chris Potters had in stock of the ammunition at the time and he treats it more like a centrefire, so the rounds will last.

I don't often have contact from Edgars, as I don't hold an account.. however same said person who purchased the Savage B-mag was the person to get this information from Edgars, as he works for CH Westons in Brighton. I don't recall a specific reason but my guess would be popularity..

Another example of something being no longer imported (or I believe discontinued in this instance) is the 25gr NTX by Hornady for the .22WMR. That was, as far as I know, the only available lead alternative available for it? I however speak from personal experience of that 22wmr NTX bullet, when I say that they have tempremental terminal effects.. I head shot a rabbit at 50 yards, to merely find it blind in one eye. I shot a rabbit in the chest front on at 130 yards, only find the whole bullet untouched in the skin of the stomach fur. Some years ago now.

I digress anyway! I was also very tempted at the time to buy a 17 wmsr but I'm glad that I didn't. My suggestion to those who own one, is perhaps up your ammunition limit and buy what you can from who has it left and make the most of the rifles you own.

I completely agree that it's a shame that there weren't many offers of those manufacturering rifles in this chambering and that it may have meant a more popular cartridge in this country, if so. I don't believe Savage rifles are generally very popular here generally? When compared to other manufacturers.

I think a .20 rimfire would have been an interesting concept and offer the best of both worlds. I am surprised considering there as there are 20cal air rifles and centrefire cartridges, that they did not consider a rimfire.

Yeah we know. Winchester made the same mistake in that other simple rimfires could not take it.
What I'm saying is, if Winchester offered a range of say three variants on that case they are using there may of been more general interest and then more manufacturers would of issued slightly stronger actions...of which just needed another tiny lug opposite the bolt handle.
A missed opportunity in my opinion.
 
Cal. .17, a concept I never understood. .22 is as small as it needs to be.
I see more people having problems with micro calibers ((including .22) than not.

A .224 CF is where it starts if one wants to shoot at 100m or beyond. Anything smaller is play stuff and not worth the bother. Proof? This forum!

I regularly plink out to 350 with my 22lr. I was once upon a time quite apt in culling rabbits at 250 with my 17hmr, along with the 22mag.

Love the small fast rimmies, shame the ammo in 17hmr let it down. As @DM Firearms said referring to the 25gntx, some were ok, others were shocking. That brought it down towards hmr velocity whilst having the versatility of running the 50g federal.

Accuracy I wouldn't complain about though. I had a Marlin 25M in a camo stock that I bedded, added a Wildcat mod. It hated alot of ammunition. I was down to three types, a 40gr CCi hp i believe, an offering by sellier and bellot that I think were fmj in 30gr perhaps? And the Hornady NTX 25grain. The NTX gave a 20 pence group which i found staggering for a wmr. Just a shame about the terminal effects.

It's very plausible and each to their own however it takes: a silly amount of practice, all scope dialling from a fixed overlook position and its not usually hold over, any wind completely ruins the chances and there are better larger cartridges for those distances in my honest opinion. Some people like the challange though. I know Jonny Elsemore who does the POI videos on Youtube did it.

I take it at that range that like a Javelin Anti Tank Missile the 22 is in “ Top Attack” mode by then
