6.5x284 Norma

.270 Kudu

Well-Known Member
Evening gents, and ladies.

I have a question for those of you on here that shoots, or have shot the 6.5x284 Norma. Before you start, yes I have done a search on SD, but seems a lot of the guys that have posted before have either left or not active for a few years. And I haven’t got the answers.
I have a Blaser ( yes I know…,,) and have a .243 and .270 barrel for it. Looking to let both go and get a 6.5x284 barrel. Will be used for mainly roe and fallow with the odd occasion at the range.
1- Barrel life is not an issue, it’s a consumable to me. I know I’m looking at 800-1200 rounds.
2- I home load, can get lapua brass and dies from a mate, I gathered factory ammo is limited to Norma’s Bondstrike only.
3- looking to feed the barrel with 130grain accubonds. Any other suggestions welcomed…

So, before I make this too confusing and wonder off topic, is this a route you would take, are you happy with yours etc? And maybe there are factors I haven’t considered that I should. Looking forward to hearing your comments, Thank you.

I have one.

I use 140 grain bullets' as it doesn’t like anything lighter.

taken from Muntjac to Gemsbok with it.

Without doubdt the best rifle I’ve ever owned, and have generally used when it comes to long range shenanigans (outside of the 300 PRC and something else).

I couldn’t recommend one highly enough, low recoil, and will pretty much kill anything on the planet from an extremely long way away. Currently I’m launching 140gr Bergers at 3200fps, it’s flat as you like, great in the wind and it hits living targets like Thors hammer from space. Love it.

I’m also about to start development with the 130gr Virtus merlin which i expect will be even better. More than happy to share load data etc if required.

May I be a pest and ask you to inbox me some load data please, my 6.5 284 is almost back from proof...

Thank you for the reply. I’ve heard good things about it. Will take you up on the load data no doubt. This caliber will be new to me so will take every bit of help I can get.

So is this the 6.5 - 284 Winchester? ~Muir
(Looking at the data, guess not.)

Thanks for the reply, was hoping to take it to SA in July. That’s reassuring to here about the gemsbok…
It’s not as empathetic killer as a 300WM though.

It will do the job but there isn’t much room for error in my experience on Kudu and Gemsbok sized antelope

Running one in blaser r8 129 gn accubonds vit 165 absolutely fantastic so far no runners but have to honest haven’t shot many yet about 15 but good so far reloaded from the outset not much factory available

I use 140 eld-m, 50gr of n160, fed gm210 primer. Seriously accurate, low recoiling and deadly. I have a 270, 6.5x47 and I used 308, 260, 243. However if someone said what rifle would you choose if you could only pick one, then it would be without a doubt 6.5-284 as long as I can reload. Obviously my reload recipe works well in my rifle but take the usual precautions for reloading

I've used both Viht 160 and Viht 150 with the 130grain Nosler accubonds and found both to be very accurate loads, like rem284, if I was only allowed to keep one rifle, this would be it.

Very accurate round, you won’t be disappointed. Try and run it around 3000ft/s or there about with the 130gr accubonds and you will be a happy man….

Thanks so much for all the responses. This was exactly what I was looking for. I think I will now go ahead and order the 6.5x284 barrel. Many thanks everyone.

One thing possibly worth bearing in mind is that the performance seems almost indistinguishable from 6.5 PRC, and it may be much easier to source components for PRC in the future.

I would keep the .243 barrel and really ask what the 6.5X284 will do that the .270 doesn’t.

With such low barrel life I would make it an addition. Barrels are usually an easy variation to obtain over the addition of a rifle. Especially with component shortages. Having the .270 where you can pick up factory ammunition almost anywhere in a pickle it would be a good shout.
