How could you not like the HMR

Love the WMR and the HMR but now I have the humble 22LR back in my life I think I may have to move one on.
After much agonising it looks like the beloved Winchester Underlever WMR may have to go - the 17HMR is an absolute tack-driver and ideal for bunnies at silly ranges and the new 22 stutzen is a joy just to look at never mind shoot.
Sooo, wot’s a boy to do, can one really have too many guns??

I had a .17HMR but got rid, had too many split necks and squibs - it got to a point where it was dangerous. I stopped taking it out the cabinet, and then a guy at the range had his explode due to a squib, so that made me think it's just not worth it. If i need to fill the niche i'll get a .22WMR - the 30grain V-max does 2200fps so not miles off 2500fps - and the WMR is much more reliable

Fun gun. Also works well on prairie dogs. Picture proof would be provided except for being extremely graphic.

However - fox/raccoon seems to be the upper end of ability. Only works on coyotes with perfect shot presentation and placement

I'm saying nothing because I did the same and probably shouldn't of!

I’m not sure why but I do very much fancy a .22wmr in the near future as a rabbit rifle for the longer shots outside of .22lr sub territory

Why not use an HMR?

Pop, pop, click, boom!
Or
Pop, pop, click, end of evening as bullet lodged in breech and nothing to poke it out with.

When it works it’s ace but as others have said it’s just too prone to naff ammo.

Exactly. I had SO many squibs. It become not of a fact of ‘is it worth it’ but ‘is this a safe firearm in general’

How long ago was this?

I ask because new production ammo seems to be good.
All old ammo from the naughties up to 2010 approx MUST be inspected prior to using.

I wouldn’t be without my .17hmr, especially now that I’ve put NV on it and stopped messing about with red lamps. It’s a brilliant tool for pest control around the farm, and has taken its fair share of foxes (even if I do have to check every box of ammo first for defects…).

How could you not like a 17 HMR?
Easy.

First shot I ever took at something living the bullet lodged in the barrel, several hang fires from different batches of ammunition later and it got sold on in favour of a hornet.

I can load 50 rounds of .22 hornet in less time than it takes me to get to the RFD and back, it’s a far superior round and with the stocks of consumables I have it’s cheaper too.

last year
Probably old ammo.

I bought some old ammo recently cheap as chips. Removed the split ones and the rest are fine.
Granted one shouldn't need to but it's better than just bellyaching about it, after all if a vehicle has a flat tyre do you ignore it and sell it moaning your bag off or just address the issue?
All ya gotta do is take a look, worry over.IMG_20230206_135507.webp

It was brand new Hornady V-max 17g purchased new from a major RFD. I'm not arguing any corner, just stating the facts as they occurred to me.
