Recreational stalkers; is anyone considering a cheaper hobby?

To many, cost is no issue whatsoever...

We have leases on here advertised for £5k per annum for Fk sake!
Most of the forestry managers I've come across don't actually consider the recreational lease holder a very effective method of deer management. Certainly in Scotland the lease is a tool to offset the sporting land tax which certainly adds up if you've a lot of ground.
Although I belive the threshold has been reduced to 12k as the amount that can be claimed back. That might be another added cost worth consideration in the future!

Yes that's correct the threshold is now 12k. However, each year my lease rateable value is reassessed and has doubled in two years, so glad I only have one lease in Scotland now otherwise I would be over the 12k.

I think this also applies to guides, who would shoot a lot more deer without the encumbrance of a paying client.

I imagine there might be a few giving up ground in Scotland on that basis!

I suspect some estates will no longer find it viable as they reduce numbers of deer and hence make things too hard for a guest rifles to gain success ?
Costs dont matter if your on the more expensive up-market venues but actually getting a chance of a shot for a person of modest skill is going to come back at the staff and management . Reducing the numbers means the less able fitness wise or skills wise aint going to like long walks for no chances
A guy renting various smaller land or block booking Estate stalking to sell on might also find things get harder
Its hard one to answer to be fair , I dont generally pay and just seem to see more and more ground holding deer so i am quietly away expecting more small venue stalking comming my way and more estates needing another rifle to account for the man hours to keep culling in line with what seems to be the plan this last few years.
Governments though hardly ever get the jobs finished that they started, how often has the fast efficient East - West rail link in the North been shelved ? History tells us its a good plan but instead we have gridlocked traffic of freight on the motorway from the ports of Liverpool to Hull

You would expect that but would you make up the cost in venison against a medal request stalk as that deer would have been left for such a outing. Muntjac Doe v GM Muntjac Buck as an example.
You could blank in both types with or with out...

Plenty of deer in west Sussex but most big estates love them and some are antis.
son in law lives in Wadhurst and his Family is well known in fire brigade as been asking for a perm for me . 🙏
That's maybe one issue most people have is that they think they need a 1000 acre estate to wander around to shoot deer.

Plenty of small bits of land that either hold deer or are used by deer moving about crossing and so can be productive especially if you're shooting for meat yourself.

If you know of large estates or farms that have a lot of deer and maybe aren't shooting that many then then try knocking on the smaller neighbours doors as they are the ones who will be suffering the most and most in need of reducing the numbers.

Thanks nun-hunter will ask him to ask people who own small bits of land as well thank you .
He took me to a plot a few years ago but that as now been sold it had some nice fallows on it and plenty of pheasants.
One can only keep knocking on doors

Do you shoot foxes/ pigeons for farmers/ Any OSR growing?

Yes will shoot all legal quarry but on my perm only shot one fox in ten years .
Went out on Sunday saw one rabbit in the distance but at least it is a permission i have.

No, my main issue is getting rid of the venison, the freezer is full, the family prefer chicken and there isn't a game dealer for 50 miles.
