My best ever wild river trout

I know..I should..

Just something I havent tried yet, when I get around to it I shall be asking here for advice on decent (budget) rod and gear to start with.
If you ever get into Kent, PM me I’ll sort you out a bit of kit, I’m overloaded, got all my mates kit when he packed up and more
Rather give it to someone that’s going to use it than just leave it hanging up in the man cave
cheers

I caught a 4lb wild brown in a stream less than 10 miles from spaghetti junction (about 35 years ago). A very small stream.
I killed it. Times were different and no-one would have believed me otherwise.
Subsequent research showed the waterboard had introduced some fingerlings about 20years previously to see how they did.
I am pleased to report the trout are still thriving in that stream
(I always check when I go back to stalk Muntjac and each time think "I must come back with the 3wt")
Great to see them and they no longer have any pressure from me 😇

Thanks for the kind offer, Im down kent in November for a day on Fallow.

Ill give you a shout.

Well done - a beautiful fish in excellent condition, especially for this time of year - just look at the depth just behind the shoulder - reminds me of New Zealand .

Lovely fish that!
I caught a chunk like that on the back lawn bank of Longparish House a good few years back on a gold head PT nymph that l just plopped under the wooden footbridge in front of a massive brown padde tail l could see under some ranunculus cuttings wrapped round the bridge leg.

The benefit of having a mate who was riverkeeper and another who was gamekeeper.

Cue a massive amount of p### take and slagging from the other people present.
"B##### poacher!"
"WORM WAS IT?"

One for the memories.

Hats off catching that with a fly. I used to target large browns on a particular river here in the states, but used hard baits or large plastic baits. They were very predatory and fishing for them as if they were pike was my ticket to success.

It was a 5# brown that earned me a trip to the Doctor as well. Trying to release him, a head shake transferred the hook from the fish’s mouth to the anglers hand. Planted it deep enough to require local anesthesia, scalpels and multiple stitches.

I spent a couple of summers chasing these in a very small Norfolk Chalk stream, 4lbs was a really good one. I loved every minute of it.

Tactics were to drop one of these just behind or level with it as they were as spooky as hell, so they would turn and take without seeing any tippet hopefully.

Lovely fish, only ever had one good wild brown on river Devon fishing for salmon with single handed rod on of all things a blue charm, so could not give a good account of itself but still went a bit and was returned but not weighed🙂

Lovely fish, fighting fit ! I despair to what has happened to Lancashire Rivers over my lifetime and IMHO the blame should land right at the Environment Agency door. Poacher and gamekeeper situation wrapped into one
