Dog with Hay Fever (Tree Pollen)

Does anyone else’s dog suffer from Hayfever ? ?

Have kept a number of dogs over the years, firsts one to have hay fever.

3 yr old GWP, second time now with pollen allergies. One antihistamine tablets 12 hours apart as she looking ok now.(cetirizine hydrochloride).

First time was 11 June 2021 and ended up in vets as looked like it was going to die. She had intravenous antihistamine and steroids and a £400 vet bill .

Do they grow out of it ? - as not so bad this time, still had swollen eyes, swollen throat and hot red ears.

That is severe! Antihistamine tablets should be enough, just don't let her drive and operate heavy machinery or firearms.

Everyday once the pollen levels get high. Mainly suffers with his eyes

I had a Bracco Italiano (see avatar) that was atopic, we had him allergy tested and it turned out he was allergic to tree and grass pollen, dust mites and anything avian, such as chicken, duck or any kind of egg.
We started off with daily antihistamines but the allergy was causing his ear canals to fill with fluid and the inevitable infection took hold. This culminated in him having both ear canals removed and new openings created lower down so that they would free drain. In one year it cost us £4.5k.
Unfortunately this led to him losing all hearing and losing contact with my wife whilst out on a walk, he tried to make his own way home but was hit by a car and killed instantly.
His allergies weren’t as severe a reaction as your dog’s but we couldn’t keep on top of the infection once it had got hold. He was 8 when he died and I’m afraid to say that he didn’t grow out of his allergies, sorry.
Any sign of head shaking, get her straight to the vet.

Update on Willow, Early yesterday morning I noticed the throat had swollen up more, and she could not open her mouth fully and was shaking her head.

11.am Bank holiday Trip to the vet confirmed inflammation of the lymph node, no obvious ear infection but is a bit waxy ,temperature is fine , so prescribed antibiotics and anti inflammatory and pain killers for 7 day.

Vet asked is it possible that she has puncture the inside of her mouth and got an infection in jaw joint. - This could be very possible and she has been living on munty carcasses the last few weeks.

This morning her side of her face is still swollen but eyes are a lot cleaner.

So verdict is out on hay fever at present or an infection or both?? .

Bellow are the photos from June 2021 when she had hay fever and ended up in emergency vet at midnight.

Regime as per:

ANTIHISTAMINES. Benadryl is the most commonly used antihistamine. It is given at a dose of 1 mg per pound of body weight, two to three times a day. It is best to consult your veterinarian before using these medications. It often takes fourteen days of using these to see if they are helping.

Thanks for the reply, there has been no more incident since I posted this, no antihistamine are being used either so probably an infection in the jaw joint caused by munty rib cages that the dog was having on a regular basis, I now remove the meat from the bone to save any further vet bills

Piriton is what we used to use or we have lots of vets ask for a reply from one that know more than just dog owners.
