I would in no way be getting one for the ballistics.
If you can get factory ammo it is a dull cartridge.
If you can easily get factory ammo it is a very very dull cartridge

280 Rem aka 7mm-06, or the European version the 7x64.

Tick for the 7 x 64, great selection of bullets, probably a few more than the quarterbores, or a 284 win on a long action!

The only thing it hammers more than a 6.5x55/6.5Cm at U.K stalking ranges is its own barrel.

Have you thought about a .270 with a fast twist barrel

Damn, I might need to stop ****ing about with a Needhoor....

Berger have just released a 170 grain bullet with a bc of 0.662, Barnes are releasing a 150 grain mono. You’ll see more and more over the next couple of years as the 6.8 western is a1:8 twist. Browning are already building their new .270’s with a 1:8 twist too.

Berger have just released a 170 grain bullet with a bc of 0.662, Barnes are releasing a 150 grain mono. You’ll see more and more over the next couple of years as the 6.8 western is a1:8 twist. Browning are already building their new .270’s with a 1:8 twist too.

Doubt these super-heavy, high BC bullets will work well on UK game.

An extended ogive is usually not condusive to expansion.

What may help is longer ogives promote upset (bullet literally goes end over end inside the chest cavity). However, most of our game is not thick skinned enough to promote this phenomena.

I'd pick these bullets for bear and elk maybe.

Also, case design needs to be considered with longer bullets. There is a reason why the new cartridges from Hornady have little to no body taper, sharp shoulder, medium to short neck.

No point having the bullet seated deep to get it to mag feed, and how long does the magazine need to be if you keep chasing long bullets with old cartridge designs?

All a bit beyond me mate, I shoot .222, 6.5x55 & .3006 for deer work and have atleast one high bc & one lead free load in each calibre. Just for the fun of it I’m trying a 175grn lrx in the .30-06 this summer but that’s as far as my “heavy for cal” exploits go. I’m running a Barnes 50grn in the .222 with the tips pulled, then a 120grn cx in the 6.5 and a 125grn cx in the .30-06.
If I had a .270 ( and I really wanted to buy that sako trg .270 that was In The classified for ages recently) I’d happily run it on the 100grn cx.

A 6.5-06 was mentioned when i contacted Callum, i must thank everyone for the suggestions its certainly given me a starting point to work from but i must say some of you guys ability to understand and explain different calibers truely bamboozles me i get lost pretty easily with it all

Personally I'd buy the brass and bullets (heads) required first if it's something you can't find factory ammo for.

That being said, brass is not far behind primers in terms if scarcity and price hikes!
