Hawke vs Vortex Warranty

Surely the recommendations and reviews instill confidence, or not as the case maybe. Badge snobs may think otherwise
I have used low end and high end in my life and if I had to start again with low end so be it.
I shot my first sambar stag with a low end 4x Bushnell, I`m sure that I could do it again...dunno about me old mince pies though.

Vortex units are pretty decent quality. I had Viper HD's and now Fury RLF's. Both are very very close in optic quality to the big names. Both come with a warranty no-one can beat. Does it matter where they are made?

It does actually. The low end Vortex are Chinese, mid range are Philippino/Japanese glass and the high end stuff is made in America.

I've both a Crossfire (Chinese) better than my old Hawke Vantage and I've a Razor LHT made in Japan and is unbelieveble. Better than my mates Zeiss v4

Interesting that mechanicals are covered by long/lifetime warranties, electronics by 2 years.

I would always suggest getting a good quality pair of binoculars or a riflescope without any electronics in them. Save your money and future heartache.

If you need a rangefinder, then get a separate rangefinder. Or just learn what your max point blank range looks like and what a deer looks like in your reticle.

As for illuminated reticles - again not convinced and having the third turret is bloody irritating especially when putting rifle away. I suppose they are useful with fine reticles or just a dot. But otherwise just add weight, complexity and something to go wrong.

Not a high bar at all, Ziess has been living off their brand name for years and old boys who have 40 year old scopes/binoculars telling the young guns they are the best (when in reality the old boys need a prescription for their rose tinted eyeglasses).

Had a V8 2.5-20x56 for work and didn't rate it at all, terrible reticle design (the #4 German reticle is simply NOT GOOD on a modern, high mag 2nd focal plane scope), stupid tube size (36mm, which they have since re-designed) and very expensive for what they are. Low light nothing special at all despite some reviews saying otherwise. Held zero OK but that's the bare minimum for any rifle scope, otherwise it's bin (SD Klassifieds) time!

Nightforce NXS that replaced it was better in nearly every regard.

Razor LHT, would not mind the 4.5-22x50 as the packaging of that scope is the most impressive thing about it. Reticle OK but heavily reliant on illumination at low mag (not a desirable trait). The other variants which are 2nd focal plane have very poor reticles.

The only hunting optic which has been executed perfectly would be the 3-12X44 Bushnell LRHS (FFP, good tracking, good size, 30mm tube and proper reticle).

Incidentally, all these scopes (not the V8) are made in Japan at Light Optical Works... :thumb:
