Aye swings and roundabouts, depends which compromise suits u best.
Must admit always thought suzuki were missing a trick in the UK with not importing the lwb model and if nz I presume right hand drive.
Everyone I know that have owned 1 all same the same great but small.
Do diahatsu still make a wee van thing, I think suzuki made a wee tiny 4wd flat bed thing.
A local farmer had a few different 1s over the years. He loved them for running about and carrying feed etc, they still had a landy for trailer work.
Was quite a wet farm and it was always well gluaared up so must of been ok off road.
Must admit been a long long time since I looked at wee 4wd options
Thinking of sending mine in for the same what’s the turnaround ?

There used to be an aftermarket 1.5 diesel option available in Europe for some reason!
I looked at various options and models including Lada and the Niva which had common engine mounts with the Peugeot 1.8 diesel
Eta I can’t be sure if the 1.5 was diesel or not now!
Agreed a metre longer metre wider would be ideal
I’m not keen to go down the engine swap route again

There's also the risk when you put a big powerful lump in a car that wasn't designed for it, that you upset the balance of the car. That could be a problem with the little lightweight Jimny.
And reflecting on that, 1.5 diesel sounds like it might work better than my 2.0L idea.

I seem to remember they used to swap the Vitara engine into the Jimny
I like the agility of the short wheelbase but I was wondering whether KAP could make an extended rear load bay, Defender 130-style.

What’s the benefits of the tray back rather than just leaving it as standard ?
£10 k would buy you a helluva rebuild without the conversion surely.
Or at least make the whole job a damn sight cheaper.
I get it if the body is rotting though.

A small trailer is the answer imo.
It isn't just the rear load bay. The standard Jimny is pretty under-powered. No issue off-road but when driving on A roads at normal speeds you have to rev the engine to the point where it's not that economical for it's size. I've noticed this on little city cars. I had to hire a car to drive from Dorset to Northumberland a while back and I picked a little Toyota Aygo, because it was cheap to hire and I thought it would sip fuel. In fact, at motorway speeds I was pushing the pedal so far into the carpet that it used more fuel than my diesel van.
Add wide fat tyres to the Jimny and I'm thinking it would have better road manners and economy with a bigger and less busy diesel engine.

It's a bit underpowered alright. I'd go for a 2 litre n/a petrol if I had lots of time and money. It's probably a false economy to replace the engine for maybe a 5mpg improvement though.
There's a heavily modified competition Jimny built by DT Engine solutions with a Chevy LS3 engine in it! Not much standard left on it though.
