Having had his ticket revoked, you can rely on him for an unbiased, evidence based, assessment of the situation.

I can see how this could look a bit suspicious, However, I wouldn't want to go down the route of, "this is part of a more sinister strategy to surreptitiously remove all firearms from legal public ownership". For no other reason than my own peace of mind!

You have a very good point there and it could well be that they are going through all there shooter's and finding some of them a bit risky.
So who on the forum knows or has heard of people who operate on the dark side of being an FAC/SGC holder? No names no pack drill! Consequently are they the recipients of this scrutiny..I hope so we must be vigilant for the longevity of our owner ship of firearms..IHMO

They do need a reason and they need to inform you. If they didn't and you appeal what would happen in court. Answer it wouldn't get to get to court as the fld couldn't provide the evidence package and the force legal team wouldn't support it or approve it. Revoking for no reason is a breach of process you then sue the chief constable.
If he's right (he strikes me as the type who's "always right"...) then I highly doubt it's the result of some kind of secret conspiracy to remove firearms from the public. More likely it's a result of post-Plymouth changes to the statutory guidance, coupled with other unseen factors and probably falsely inflated by the ever-increasing amount of anecdotal "evidence" bring made available via social media.
10 years ago you didn't have every Tom, Dick and Harry complaining on Facebook that they'd been revoked for "no reason". You also didn't have Toms, Dicks and Harrys on Facebook posting photos of badgers they'd shot in the lamp or sharing racist videos, etc. and then being surprised when word of their antics gets back to the licensing dept...

If the police are clearing up past errors of "fit to be entrusted" judgement then fair enough.
As i posted elsewhere yesterday i heard of an acquaintance who allegedly had an incident of some sort with his neighbour, don’t know or care about the details but the police called and removed his firearms, give them a reason and they will act, which as said above is fair enough.
I always start from the viewpoint that the system is as designed to weed out 'undesirables - its certainly not a rubber stamp so, either the Police fail to operate it correctly or people lie. The latter seems unlikely certainly I dont know anyone who has.
Therefore revocations possibly follow e.g. motoring offences/cautions for violence/drunkenness/ other failings in otherwise law-abiding people. This number of revocations would have to be judged against the similar number of 'crimes' in the general population before it could be said to amount to a 'policy'.
I find it seriously stupid for shooters to say there are 'undesirables' in our midst. Remember we are the most law-abiding group in society, that is apart from those who stay at home etc.
Shooting badly is something we all should not tolerate - from a poor judge of range to a doubtful backstop to a game shooter carrying his shotgun in a position other than 'heaven of hell', obviously always unloaded or sleeved where possible and appropriate. So without wishing to lecture, do NOT tolerate poor shooting behaviour - walk away/leave or comment. Whatever you do, dont criticise shooters as 'unsuitable' if they are that bad you are obliged to report it to the Police.

I only have one complaint about licensing, they do a crap job, march 2020 I notified them I had sold my last remaining controlled items, and asked them to cancel both my certs.
Easy isn't it, I never heard a word from them, until this year when I was notified my certificates needed renewal, I called them and asked what was happening.
They knew I didn't have any firearms as I had notified them they were sold, I asked what had happened to the certificates I had returned, they had no idea.
The notifications of selling, both certificates and the covering letter were all delivered by the Royal Mail on a signed for service. They must have received them, as they recorded the disposal of my firearms.
At this point I really dont care, but I still have not had a visit from the police or licensing.
