Which 6MM hunting cartridge?

For simplicity 243 win

They all do the same thing, they all kill and are all accurate, however try picking up 6x47 in shop.

I can walk into any shop and pick up a box of 243, it is a very versatile cartridge and readily avaliable so it's all good in my book!

If I was going to be really different I'd get my 243 chambered to Ackley improved just to be different and have the bonus I don't need to search around for consumables for relaoding!

Whilst pondering on which six you might want may I suggest considering availability of the various reloading components if going down the line the, perhaps, slightly more exotic.

Nice. What load do you use? Mine has taken fox, roe and beaver so far....
Nosler 95gn BT over N140 (can’t remember powder weight off the top of my head but probably around 30gn?) with a GM205M primer. Rifle has a 1:8 twist & is a tack driver originally built for McQueen at 300 yards.

Thank you all for the input. Lots to think about and research. It looks like picking a 6mm is like choosing from a box of chocolates, theres so many! I shot another roe this eve with the 6.5 prc and it has compounded my need for a smaller and slower round for <100yrds. I guess I’ll just see what reamers are available from smiths that will make Blaser barrels, or go for the 6xc. Or get a Kipplauf perhaps. Or a get a custom rifle made. I’m still very undecided!

The 6XC would be my choice seeing as you can have it drop in with your current setup. That and it's a damn good calibre anyway

I have Ronin currently doing a semi custom in 6XC.

As a easy to buy factory ammo cartridge choice, i would recommend a 243, but the 6XC and 6BR are excellent cartridges.

If i could pass on a recommendation, would be organise an action of your choice and have it rebarreled in a 1-7.5/1-8 twist. This twist rate choice will be happy with anything from 55gr up to 110 for reloading or running factory ammo.
It should also come in at a price of less than a new rifle, but something more specific to your needs and bullet choice (55g-110 lead or copper)

I've dabbled with 6BR, 6XC, 6X47L, 6PPC and few others and they all shoot great, some better than others at 1200 yards and beyond (this is all relative in the grand scheme of things on the same bullet used - does it shoot 0.4moa or 0.5 moa o 0.6moa at that distance...this is a stalking page, so not really relevant.)

Currently my choice is 6XC and am more than happy with how it shoots

Is the 6mm really suitable for under 100m use. Most, even with 100gn bullets are fast shooting cartridges. I stopped using my 243 as I found even the 100gn lead bullets (RWS) resulted in massive carcass damage on Roe. I went over to using a 7mm 140gn trundling along at 2650 fps fir woodland Roe.

Moving to monolithics, they cause much less damage and for last several Roe I have shot 223 50gn Peregrines work very well without excess damage. Have also shot several 130 and 140gm 7mm monolithics and no more or less damage - nice clean carcass.

Carcass damage is the terminal effect of the type of bullet, rather than choice of calibre or cartridge.
