All right then.

So these just turned up. The 'left-hand' drive, thread thingy removers (£7 off Amazon)

Bit concerned that they looked a bit wee for the job, but picked the biggest.

Trot off down to the cave, die (which has been in the freezer for 48 hours) into the press, then the 'thingy' into the .243 brass. Gently start the operation, by a few encouraging whacks with a sledgehammer, and then screw away...

She bites, and we are in. Transfer everything to the vice (with thingy hanging down) - insert brass rod into top of die and repeat the delicate process of smashing it with the sledge.

Nobody more surprised than me at the result...:oops:

Delighted that I will now not have to bother family, and one kind member off here (who volunteered to lathe it better).


Think this pretty much qualifies me as something of an artisan gunsmith...pretty sure that is right...

I reload 308W ammo with Redding neck bushing die set in an AI AT & it shoots 0.18moa (5 rounds from a bench at 100 yards).
This confuses me (wot’s new) - moa is 1 inch at 100 yards (open to correction) so how can 5 rounds at 100 yards of of even .223 (.224) c/f fit into 180 thou? Even if they all went through exactly the same hole the group would be .224 - or am I missing (see wot I did!) something……

Well done.

As an aside, I prefer the Irwin version (doesn't require a whack from a mallet). Just twist left and it jack screws the case out of the die. But your process works too, so. 🤷‍♂️

As the saying goes... "If it's stupid, but it works...it isn't stupid."

To be fair, I did try and order Irwin (on the back of your recommendation), but they are a wee (read massively) bit more expensive.

They were also having to come from the USA and delivery time was not great - not that I was in any rush.

I have not looked (because I suspect I know the answer), but everything we order from Amazon, seems to be made in China.

Cheap and Cheerful - at least on this occasion.:rolleyes:

Moa = centre to centre of the group of 5 shots, but sorry you are not shooting that well without winning benchrest cups, measuring the group needs very complicated equipment so show the proof group. ATB.

Well that settles it, it is me! How the hell can you measure such tiny groups when the centres have merged?

Well.

Now that I have become a professional gunsmith, and repaired the .243 die...

First thing is to write a wee note on the 'left-handed' thingamabobs - because as sure as eggs are eggs, in about a month or so, I will have forgotten what they are, and what they are for.

Back down to the "Cave" and just finish off the reloading of sixteen 😖 fifteen rounds.

Post match analysis.

The whole drama was using a shell holder that was not the perfect size (different manufacturer), thus causing the brass to slip out of the holder and remain fast in the die.

Err, in the spirit of goodwill that is always abroad in SD I would suggest respectfully that you may wish to revise the nomenclature of your bullets. Unless of course you load them with wine and soda water……

Why would you be resizing a primed case?
I recently loaded some 243 ammo and at the range the hammer wouldn't cock on my break barrel rifle.
Back home i put the loaded rounds through a 243 body die and after the shoulder was pushed back they fired just fine.

BTW, this same method works well for a separated case in a rifle chamber (if you have a tap handle extension; otherwise you have to pull the barrel). AMHIK
