Compact (folding) Skinner..

It’s not often I need to skin in the field or soon after shot but my landowner was keen on keeping this afternoons muntjac doe and as he is suffering a little with eyesight i skinned and jointed the doe after shooting so he could freeze (yes I know, should have gone through rigor and chilled slowly, but he wasn’t worried)

I carry a mora companion and a very pointy browning folding knife (like a detail blade) neither of which is ideal for skinning (and the mora is more of an ‘external’ knife)

Any suggestions for a small fixed, or even better small folding skinner? ( mora goes on belt, browning and hopefully this on bino pack)

Helle make some lovely blades. Never been a fan of stainless, but these are mustard. Kletten or Nipa?

He could have chilled the jointed beast for 4 days in a fridge before freezing. It goes a long way address what you describe.

Have used opinels, but this is my favourite

Not a folding knife- but check Rosseli knives out. My Mrs and son bought me one for Christmas two years ago, arrived engraved 3-4 days later from Finland. Hand made knives for great prices. Think the grand father knife would be ideal for you Will look for link

And then it’ll be a real b@st@rd to skin if in fur or dried out and crunchy skin if skinned. Muntjac always best skinned quickly and butchered IMHO:popcorn: Doing last night’s today after 12 hrs in the fridge.

Butchery supplies do sell cheap , thin in section Skinning knives with a tip well high of centre.. Cheap as most of these semi disposable knives are . Victorinox do the Rabbit ( more a small boner ) I actually stock the standard 5" staight boner and supply them with a kydex sheath.
Also make a specialised " skinning " knife in SF100 61-62 Rockwell hardness but its not particulary small . All the stalking knives will skin even though the centre point is not ideal for skinning with its centre point that's designed for gralloching and bleeding. The average user unused to proper " skinning " knives are often better with a stalking knife rather than a " skinner " My Muntjac stalking knife is an easy to use stalking knife that is also good from rabbits to Stags , the finger or thumb ( depending on inclination) really aids fine control. 329592308_1260786324786841_3138826617776106356_n (1).webp

Exactly this, first time skinning muntjac warm, I won’t being doing cold again (despite wrong tools)

The rabbit is perhaps my favorite victorinox larder knife, not compact enough for what I need though

Mora roeing knife and your Opinel will be sufficient.
