Hi I realise a lot of you on here have money to burn and others that dont. I was wondering if any non professional stalkers came up with a cheap or home made version of the capstan winch as i just cant afford or justify that type on money on a winch id rather buy a quad (I know the down sides with that also and it wont do all a capstan will and vice versa). I mainly stalk alone and 99% reds and was wondering if there were and other solutions that are pratical and do make the job easier and what or how you made them

Any thing hand crank is going to take time, getting a fixing is key so you could use a larger type of car winch with a bigger drum. The problem is need clearance for the handle but the good old Schweppe's crate made good hop up for many a brick layer as light and strong so use one of them with a ply base.
Drum size is the killer
My question is how do you do it at the moment ?
Land rovers used to have a capstan winch but that is a whole money pit owning one lol

At the moment I beg and borrow quads or the other solution I have came to is don't shoot them where I can't get a rope and jeep or bring 1 or 2 green stalkers who aren't aware of the fun after the shot. Bit I started restricting my shooting but I usually only shoot stags when I have company. If I thought I'd get a donkey or pony in back of jeep I'd have one of those by now

I was asked to help out fox shooting and it was just a person they wanted to open shut gates so that got old very quickly lol

Sounds like you can't be helped only with green stalkers. :tiphat:

I'd buy one of those engines on flea Bay if I thought I could the the gearbox to hookup to it. I like the idea of just warp the rope round it and keep tension on it be a great idea if anyone sourced sny cheaper versions

Has anyone got any experience with the warn ones that say they run off a good cordless drill, sounds too good to be true
I was seriously looking at those but a friend recommended another option that runs off a battery. I haven’t got round to taking it further yet but I will soon. I’ll try and find the link he sent me.

Always good to have a "gate b**ch" on board when spotlighting! ;)

Cheers

If you are restricting your stalking and walking past stags it would soon pay for its self if you didn't need to walk past deer

And use cost as an expense on tax return!
It's the best piece of kit I've bought and never regretted it, I never look at a deer now and think, sod that he can walk!
I totally agree the best thing I ever did was get a cheap quad. I don't worry about shooting lots in one stalk anymore or where I shoot them. My cull returns went up alot from that one decision
