22-250 Twist Rate

Looking at a new rifle in this calibre for the first time. The twist rate on new guns varies from 1:7 to 1:14. My understanding is the faster twist rates will stabilise heavier/longer bullets and the slower rates better for lighter bullets. The new gun is for foxing mainly and at present I’m using 53gr V Max (on 22gr N130) in .223. I want to stay with the lighter bullets, under 60gr. Should I avoid the 1:7 (CZ600 Alpha) and go with 1:10 (Sauer 100)??
and before this thread goes off topic….Yes, I know about the CZ recall etc!

1 in 7 may be getting a little bit much for lighter bullets. Some will stabilise ok but people often report issues in 223 when going with such a tight twist.

If you're only going to use 53g bullets, then 1 in 14 (as in the case of most Tikkas) will work fine
1 in 7 is maybe a little fast for very light bullets although I have 35g shot non lead (Hornady NTX) through a 1 in 9 twist 22-250 without any issues

Cheers

Bruce

My rifle is a 1-8 twist Krieger , 26 inch 22-250
I've read stories about them over spinning lighter bullets such as the 40gr ,so I tried it and in my rifle , they worked fine and didn't disintegrate the bullet.
The tight twist does lose me some velocity.
My current bullet of choice is the 53gr yew tree , powered by 38.1 gr RS60 trundling along at circa 3730FPS.

I've tried nosler 60gr and sierra 69grtmk

All work perfectly.

Thanks all. Think I’ll either go with a new Sauer 100 1:10 or a used Sako75 1:14.
if you ignore Tikka. There’s not an awful lot of choice in new 22-250…Schultz & Larsen! Sauer, Bergara, Howa…

Will a fast load not be problematic with some light fast lead loads and possibly dusting in things like the Zinc filled offerings ?

I used an 8 twist in an improved 22-250 it stabilised 63 and above

I did say 9 to 12 would be optimal for the OP application

Just get a standard 1/14 twist 22/250, they shine with bullets from 35g to 55g and that's the point of it, fast and flat, apparently, some shoot the 60g but I haven't got around to trying them. If you want to shoot anything heavier use a 243! You're overthinking it. I've had my R8 for about ten years and never regretted the standard twist rate. A 50g/55g frangible bullet from a 22/250 going anywhere between 3500 and 3800 fps, easily doable, is more than enough for Charlie, especially in the dark. Obviously, that's just my opinion. 22/250 along with my 22 Hornet are the most used guns in my cabinet, and for good reason.

I had my 1-14 twist rebarreled with 1-12 twist just to shoot the 53gr vmax as they don’t stabilise in the 1-14.
Only used for foxing so don’t need a heavier bullet.
I’ve got other calibres for heavier bullets.

Interesting….did a bit of research..apparently it’s due to the length of the 53gr V Max rather than the weight.

Wow!! That’s a very serious sense of humour failure! Thank you for sharing your opinion…we will all benefit from that. Regards, Frank
To everyone on here, particularly admin’/moderators. Can I point out that my comments regarding lead free ammunition were an attempt at light hearted banter.
