Hey

I'm thinking of active ear plugs for stalking and maybe rough shooting, I use gel peltor sportac for clays, driven game and range and the £45 quid beretta plugs for stalking currently

I‘m not paying Cens hype prices having been told I need the £800 versions for stalking

swatcom cans have a good reputation, any experience of their active in ear? £320 feels OK…

Other suggestions welcome

The key thing with any of the in ear type protection is that they need to fit correctly and so this means you may need to experiment a bit with the ear tips that you use as it is a pretty long shot that the ones supplied will be a good fit for your ears. So if you order the EEP-100s, for example, then don't be at all surprised if they aren't super comfy or effective out of the box. I would suggest that you try to get foam ear tips that suit you as they offer great levels of isolation when compared to most of the other options, especially the custom moulded plugs.

Peltor make what they call "communication eartips" and these fit my Peltor in ear protection (basically the version before the EEP line) and I find they work well for me. A box of them is relatively expensive but you can rinse them off and reuse them etc. so a box will actually last you a lifetime they are part number CCC-GRM-25
 
I've seen a brand called "Custom Fit Guards" also get a fair bit of recommendation (thing Jonny at TGS is sponsored by them - and has a 10% discount code?)

I only have a pair of normal custom moulds (not electronics) that I got from a local hearing care professional. Think the brand she worked with is called Minerva, and I believe the same brand that you can get done at specsavers! Memory seems to tell me that those came out around about £300ish for electronic ones as well.

i have the decibullz. they are ok but that is as far as i would go. they are hard if worn for a long time. the foam ends are the best but i find a little awkward to fit initially. that said i have used them for around 6 months as they do not fall out or come loose. so for 29 quid they are ok.

i have been looking at the earmor m20t or GDK HD ear pro bud. has anyone used them?

I use the Swatcom custom fit SC20s for stalking, as I have a K95 Stutzen, which as you can imagine gives off quite a report.
The fitting process was a bit of a pain as my ears had too much wax in them the first time I went for an appointment, so I had to get them cleared at a Just Ears clinic (by micro suction). You also need to make sure that you ears remain clear of wax, otherwise you will end up pushing the built up wax deeper into the ear canal whenever you use the plugs. I use earol spray once a week and that seems to do the trick; it’s not very expensive.
On the positive side, Swatcom are very nice people to deal with. The plugs are comfortable and highly effective. You know they are there, but they are unobtrusive and of course there are no ear cans to bang the stock against when mounting the gun/rifle. I use them for pigeon shooting too. They also appeared to offer much greater value for money than some of the other custom brands out there.

I’ve been using a pair of EEP 100’s for over a year, mainly for clays and they’ve not been that great. Audio quality is not that good and not particularly comfortable particularly when wearing them for a long clay session.

I’ve order a pair of Custom Fit Guards to replace them. Hopefully this will be an improvement in audio quality and comfort.

The other issue with rechargeable ear plugs is that they seem to loose their charge over the course of a week or so.

Hence you need to remember to charge them the day before you need them. Hearing aid batteries is a much better power source and will guarantee your never run out of power if you keep some spares with you.

What issues do you have with them?

Fit is just down to finding the right ear buds/tips for your ears. The supplied ones I didn't get on with but the ones marketed for Cens Mino fit great and are really comfortable to wear all day.

Mine hold charge, so likely a fault if yours don't.

They also rated about the best for hearing protection, which was discussed a lot, I think by @fizzbangwhallop and @Alantoo
 
I bought the Cens mino tips as suggested, good job because the largest foam tip is the best fit by far.. No issues with them per se just a little underwhelmed in terms of how fiddly they are seem quite basic, however they certainly cut down noise on the one shot I fired. Maybe I’m just grumpy !
 
I bought some of the isotunes free to try out. i must say they were not what what i was expecting. sound deadening yes and if you wanna listen to music they would be great. i never wanted to listen to music while out shooting. if you wanna have a conversation or listen out for wildlife etc. they are a no go. if you are looking for the same apparently look for the ones that say aware or sport. they were nice and small but i need something that amplifies normal sounds and deadens the shot.
